How do Americans make tea?

Morning!!! We are in our AirBNB in the States and it's 5:30am. Just me and the baby up since 4am!

There are 3 different types of coffee machine - pod style, barista and caffetiere! But no kettle! But there are tea bags!!

Have tried using pod machine but have had to run it through 3 times to get rid of remnants of coffee. Surely there is a better way?

How do I make a cup of tea??

Pan of water on the hob?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 01/12/2024 10:32

How do you boil water without a kettle... You can microwave it. You can use a pan on a stove.

Spangler · 01/12/2024 10:33

Ugh. They do it in the microwave a lot! Or on the hob. I’d do it on the hob if I were you.

username358 · 01/12/2024 10:34

They don't have kettles. As suggested boil water on the hob.

NotAnOverSharer · 01/12/2024 10:35

Yep O think hot tea isn't such a thing in much of the states so they microwave. I'm assuming you either don't have a hob/pan or else are just so sleep deprived you didn't think of that method to boil water. Either way, good luck getting a proper brew going!

BertieBotts · 01/12/2024 10:35

I would drink coffee.

You can boil water in a saucepan but the tea probably won't taste right anyway unless you've brought your own teabags from home.

Water from a coffee machine is too cold to brew tea properly and it will taste even worse.

BertieBotts · 01/12/2024 10:37

Electric kettles aren't as common there because they have lower voltage so it would take longer to boil and it's probably just inconvenient enough that it tips over to not being worth it. Plus they don't have the same culture as the UK for tea drinking. Drinking tea there is about as popular as drinking herbal tea is for us, ie, not very.

Janefx40 · 01/12/2024 10:38

Thanks everyone!! Yes of course I know I can boil water on a hob!!!I just assumed since Americans drink tea regularly they might have a system I was missing.

Thanks for taking time to respond

But if they drink mostly herbal it doesn't need fully boiling water anyway I suppose

Is there a whistles-when-boiling kettle for the stovetop? That’s very normal to have in the US. Definitely electric kettles are thin in the ground there.

LilyJessie · 01/12/2024 10:45

They microwave!

Janefx40 · 01/12/2024 10:51

No stove top kettle. Just 2 saucepans - have a pan on the hob - next issue - baby (well toddler) keeps turning it off again!

And yes I will keep him away from the hob!

I bet they've only got Lipton as well....

Opuntia · 01/12/2024 10:56

I knew I had truly turned into my parents when I packed my own tea bags on holiday

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 01/12/2024 10:58

Microwave.

They drink a lot of sweet tea which is cold.

Janefx40 · 01/12/2024 11:01

Couldn't let the UK down! 2 types of tea bags packed (Yorkshire and decaf).

How do Americans make tea? Like the vessel with the vessel with the pellet with the poison... stick to coffee, they're much better at that...

😁
