Are there any other hotels as eccentric as the one on Burgh Island?

I really want to go to the hotel on Burgh Island. But I also want to know if it is really unique or there are other hotels that are old fashioned, eccentric and wonderful looking I could try too?

It was on the market from June 23 until Sept 24. Has a refinancing deal in place so it might be interesting to see what happens.

Camelot in Tintagel. Weird as hell. The owners will try to sell you appalling artwork for a grossly inflated price. ( Someone I knew fell for it)

LadyWiddiothethird · 30/11/2024 20:48

@FuzzyPuffling I fell for it as well!,I did knock the price down......a lot.It really is a strange place,I would never stay there,my son lives nearby and we just went for afternoon tea.The reviews on Trip Advisor tell a story.

Highwayman Inn at Sourton.
We’ve got all the weird places in the Southwest

Giggorata · 30/11/2024 20:53

The Covenstead in Glastonbury. Well, it's a B&B really.
Home from home, if you're pagan.

The Corsewall Lighthouse hotel in Scotland might interest you. Or Cley Windmill in Norfolk. Maybe The Pelirocco in Brighton or the Ruby Lucy in London. Oxford has a Gaol hotel and so does Bodmin. The Aviator at Farnborough is flight themed and there’s a railway carriage to stay in at The Old Railway Station in East Sussex.

Abroad? Hundreds of places are quirky.

Burgh island is wonderful and well worth the visit

Burgh island is fabulous

FuzzyPuffling · 30/11/2024 21:05

Any Landmark Trust place, although they are self catering.

CoolShoeshine · 01/12/2024 20:48

Burgh Island would definitely be on my bucket list if it wasn't so expensive. It's beautiful and incredibly unique and I'd love to stay there.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/12/2024 20:52

We recently stayed at Baskerville hall in hay on wye.
definitely not as lux as Burgh island (we live quite close) but charming in a very eccentric way.

JC03745 · 01/12/2024 20:58

What am I missing? Is the Burgh Island hotel eccentric because its art deco or some other reason???

I stayed in this B&B in Agrigento, Sicily,La Dolce Vita. Every part of the room was covered in the most over the top, ornate decorations. Even the fridge and back of the door was padded with upholstery! No, it wasn't a previous manor house/castle etc, it was all added to the rooms for effect 🙄

Omg the light box did he try to take you do the basement to see the light box 😂
I'm sure it's a cult

I'd love to stay in Portmeirion. Not sure what the accommodation is like there.

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/12/2024 21:34

I'm not sure if it's what you mean by eccentric but I love the Bon Sol in Majorca. It's so unlike any other hotel I've been to, packed full of antiques and suits of armour and you get to the pool and sea via a series of tunnels the owners blasted out of the rock with dynamite in the years before health and safety and planning permission. Really classic / old-fashioned restaurant with candelabras and a pianist. It's been in the same family for decades and I believe they close each season with a big Halloween party.

Not stayed here, but always fancied it.

Fish and chips on burg island is good though, can recommend that 😀

I've been here and it was amazing, Ive always wanted to go back- sadly it hasn't been open since covid and was recently sold. I do hope it reopens.

It's a bit far for a weekend away but we once stayed in the fire engine room in this place. I didn't sleep very well as it felt quite large and echoey, but it was very interesting. https://www.adelaideheritage.com/fire-station-inn

Interesting to hear you all liked Burgh island - have you stayed recently (last 2-3 years?). I looked for next year for a big celebration for me, and was put off by the reviews vs the cost. I have stayed in lovely places (not quirky) and the reviews and costs matched somehow.

Ha ha, no. I used to live near it and it was legendary. All locals knew to avoid, avoid, avoid. Cult is about right!

TizerorFizz · 02/12/2024 08:51

@socialdilemmawhattodo As I said earlier, the hotel was up for sale. For ages and it didn’t sell. It’s now been refinanced so whether that’s to stop it from going under or for refurbishments I don’t know. I would imagine getting staff there and getting them home again is a major effort. Do they stay on the island? At what cost? Most hotels don’t have these issues. Everything going in there is more difficult and expensive than many hotels. So I’m not surprised it’s expensive.

Oh the cost wasn't the issue. It's always been expensive. But the recent reviews were not that great. I'd seen the articles about the sale. It probably does need a lot of maintenance and renovation, so I'll wait. And book elsewhere for my big celebration.

Portmeirion is wonderful. We stay in the village rooms and eat at the hotel. We have travelled far and wide but it really is still our favourite place.

Have just returned from our sixth year…it’s quite simply magical!
