I'm thinking Premier Inn level of hotel - so reliable and clean but not anything special. We're a family of five and usually take two rooms between us, so ones where there is a decent extra bed v helpful (eg premier inn family rooms in UK usually comfortable)

I think Premier Inn are actually in Germany now, might be worth checking if/where they are in Berlin.

We stayed in in the Sheraton Grand Hotel Esplenade & it was quite reasonable and they do triple rooms.

We stayed at the Premier Inn at Alexanderplatz and it was clean, comfortable and very good value. It felt nicer than the UK ones (and the breakfast was better) but that maybe because it was new? I see there are a few other Premier Inns in Berlin now.

Look at Scandic Hotels, we stayed at the one near Bikini Berlin shopping centre. They definitely do family rooms.

For Berlin look at Meininger hotels.

There's a Holiday Inn Express in Berlin basically on Alexanderplatz and breakfast is included in the price. It was clean, comfortable and had Premier Inn style family rooms available.

We stayed in a Premier Inn near the park where Berlin Zoo is. It was really nice and good value. There's lots of hostels also in Berlin.

In Paris, I’d recommend Hotel de Flore in Montmartre - reasonably priced, clean, comfortable, very helpful staff.
