Hello I'm having my very first holiday in winter. I'm off to Spain Benalmadena on 27th December until 10th January. I'm really struggling what to pack would I need shorts and t shirts or jeans, jumpers. I know the outdoor swimming pool is still open not heated would it be hot enough to bring swimsuit and sunbath. Is there mosquito this time of year. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The afternoons might be warm enough for shorts and t shirts and a bit of sunbathing.

When the sun goes down it will get cold very quickly & you will need jumpers, jeans, coats etc. The morning will be cold until 10/11am most likely.

If you're going to be doing any sights, do them first thing while it's cool & get back to your hotel for afternoon sunshine.

Well looking on the BBC weather forecast which goes up to the 11th Dec it's saying max 17 degs in the day and 9 at night. I'd be in jeans and tshirt in that weather with a hoodie/jumper for when the temperature dips in the evenings. Not sure I'd be braving the unheated pool but no harm in taking a swimming costume just in case.

unheated pool will be freezing. agree with what others have said. Could be mosquitos but werent any when we went.

mamatoTails · 28/11/2024 11:37

Im currently in leggings, socks, slippers and a hoodie. It's chilly here today, although I'm not as far down as that part of Spain.
Pools way too cold! I wouldn't even even brave heated pools as it's so cold when you get out.

Mornings are cold. Sun often shows itself in the afternoon so jumpers do come off but by 5ish it's chilly again

Layers. Bring a jumper or 2. Night are cold.

Equates to UK Spring weather - some warm bits but cool/cold mornings and evenings. As others have said, layers. You can always buy extra sweatshirts or t-shirts in Spain.

Plan for UK April weather. I can't imagine you will want to swim.
I go to the canaries in winter where it's considerably warmer than mainland Spain but the pools are freezing.

I don’t think you would have mosquitos. I’ve had none at similar times of year in Portugal, Canary Islands. I think it might be nice but not sunbathing weather but a bikini does t take up much space! Outdoor pool if not heated will be cold. However it will be a far nicer climate than uk so I’m sure you will enjoy. You wont need wooly jumpers, just leggings, tops and a few cardigan type layers?

mitogoshigg · 28/11/2024 16:46

Layers - check forecast nearer the time but I suspect you can wear dresses and a light jacket or jeans and a long sleeve t shirt in the day but come the evening you are likely to need a more substantial jacket especially if the food/entertainment is outside.

On the subject of swimming, it's too cold in summer in the unheated pools in my opinion, ditto the sea - I'm not really the best person to ask Grin. DP always swims but he swims in the sea in the U.K., even in Scotland!

If you're used to going cold water swimming in this country you might be able to cope with an unheated pool in Spain in the middle of winter. I'd take layers for the day and a warm jacket for night time.

Pusspot · 28/11/2024 22:16

I often go to southern Spain for winter sun. I mostly wear jeans/chinos/long skirts with layers on my top half. Shoes are either Birkenstocks or trainers, depending on the time of day. I take a puffer jacket, scarf and gloves for the evening. (The locals will be well wrapped up).
Sometimes I sunbathe in a swimsuit if I have a sheltered balcony or terrace, but not often.
It will feel much warmer than the uk in January though!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/11/2024 23:27

Average day time temp will be about 16 - 17 degrees but it will feel a whole lot warmer in the sun. I normally wear a T shirt and leggings or light joggers and sandals. If you are lucky you will be able to sit out in shorts and a sun top in the hottest part of the day. If it's generally cloudy you'll need jeans / hoody / trainers . If you are very unlucky you may get heavy rain so take a waterproof in case. Even if the weather is lovely during the day time, it will get chilly in the evening so you'll want jeans / trainers / sweater / jacket .

I've never seen a mosquito in Spain in the winter.

I'm also heading out that way on 27th December!
