Australia

I like Australia and have been three times. I like it because they speak English and I don't do well in countries where I don't speak the language and they cannot understand me. I recently went to Australia and really enjoyed it and I want to go again but what puts me of is the amount of money it costs and the time it takes to get there. I don't mind a long haul flights but the jet lag takes longer to get over each time I do it and someone said to me why don't I spend the same amount of money going to a different country and experiencing a new culture because even if I go to a different part of Australia each time the culture is still more or less the same so I'm not really benefiting and if I go to Europe I could have three times the amount of holidays then I could with one long hole to Australia because the amount of money that I spend going to Australia could give me three holidays to Europe indifferent countries experiencing a new culture each time like France or Germany or Spain so I just don't know if that's better or the time wasting my money to keep going to Australia

Would posters please stop encouraging this woman to go to Australia. We have enough issues here in Australia without strangely aggressive Brits visiting us thank you.

I'm actually sobbing 😭🤣

JulianWalker · 27/11/2024 08:46

I always think Hawaii is a good choice.

Kittylickingplate · 27/11/2024 21:39

Tahiti looks nice...

sonjadog · 28/11/2024 16:42

The OP won't like it.

I looked the other day at flights and was surprised to see it’s over 20 hours of travel.

I'm with you. Too many posters suggesting NZ.
She's been to Wellington so 'has done NZ' thank goodness so will not be darkening this side of the Tasman which we can all be thankful for

(For anyone else ....believing you've 'done NZ' after a visit to Welly it's a bit like saying you've 'done Europe' by visiting Birmingham.)

You have nit answered my questions. Ive done Usa and it no longer interests me anymore

Rude much. You do realise your op doesn't have any actual questions in it. You've implied you are inviting opinions on the near versus far options but no question.

Flute56 · 17/11/2024 03:12

Don't need to swear anyway as I said I'm not coming back to this stud anymore I initially asked if it was a waste of money to keep going to Australia and I haven't really got a proper answer so I'm barring out of this thread now is gone very badly and I don't want anything more to do with it I know what I like I know what I want and if people can't accept that and try to persuade me to see part of the world I'm not interested in then I'm out of here

🤣🤣🤣

Which part of Australia do you want to visit, what time of the year, travel using internal flights or stay in one place? Huge number of options.

Thinking of Sydney but I am pretty open to be honest. I just really want to visit the country. In terms of what time of the year I heard that March is usually quite cheap.

Parker231 · 29/11/2024 10:53

June - August is the cheapest time for flights as it’s their winter. If you want to visit Sydney you would probably need to hire a car to explore the area - Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Port Stephen’s, Featherdale, Jarvis Bay, Kangaroo Valley etc. Alternatively you could book a tour which organises everything for you.
You also need to consider whether you want to build in some stopovers - takes time but you could visit Singapore, LA, Hong Kong.

Sorry, when you say visit the ‘country’, do you mean Australia, or ‘the country’ as in country areas or are you thinking country = outback. Not having g a go, just trying to work it out as when we refer to country it can mean several different things here (in Australia).

If you want to visit Australia as a whole then Sydney is not representative. No one place would be. While we are one country it’s really more like Europe in that, in terms of diversity, we are made up of many different countries, but we just don’t have country borders or call ourselves different country names. Some visitors claim we have a homogenous culture (as in, ‘but Europe has different cultures, Australia is all same same’), which couldn’t be further from the truth, and when you drill down into it you find they visited, say Sydney and Melbourne, or multiple places that did have the same ‘culture’ rather than going to places that are very diverse.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 29/11/2024 11:26

Sydney was my least favourite place in Australia. But it depends what you're looking for.

I lived in Sydney for a few years. I can't say I ever experienced a 'cheap' time of year. It's bloody expensive all the time.

Things cost the same irrespective of the time of year. Flights around £1000-£1500 which rarely changes. Central Sydney hotels £150+ a night. Avoid the 4 weeks around Xmas and most of Jan and Aussie school holidays which means hotels, car rental and flight prices go up.

March is a fairly good time to go. Still hot but not oppressive. As PP have said tours to places will be cheaper in Winter eg July/August but it gets pretty chilly, very very rainy and windy in Winter. Sydney is bloody awful in the grey and rain

Femalefootyfan · 29/11/2024 22:20

We’ve been to Sydney in January, April & September & thought September suited us best. Hotel prices were a bit cheaper, the weather was good albeit with a couple of showers. It’s an expensive city so take advantage of deals & look at serviced apartments or Air BnB to self cater some of the time

HoppingPavlova · 29/11/2024 22:40

This. Avoid school hols at all costs as prices are much higher due to people holidaying internally within the country. To make it harder for you, we don’t have the same school hols all over Australia so you need to investigate based on where you will be going. For example QLD has different holidays to NSW (to make it even more confounding not all of QLD/NSW has the same holiday as western NSW is different to Eastern NSW and I believe far north QLD may be different to south, but may be wrong on that). Anyway, point being while QLD may not have school hols at the time their prices will be dearer if NSW has school hols then as they are accounting on people heading up there on mass.

Ah, come on now..... this can't be for real.

getahhtmapub · 01/12/2024 18:50

OP: I like Australia. Where else might I like?
MN posters: Canada maybe? NZ? Croatia? Malta? US? Fiji?
OP: I don't like Croatia. I'm not interested in Malta or the US or Fiji. I've been to Canada and it was closed. I've been to a tiny part of NZ and it was shit and the rest looks boring. I don't like any of these and no one is giving me a proper answer. If I want to go to Australia I will. Stop forcing me to like places I don't like!
