Want to visit Vienna, is two days enough to cover the main sights? Is it walkable and any tips on where to stay? Airbnb? Hotels? Going with friends. Any top tips gratefully received. TIA

Two days totally inadequate for this wonderful historic city, but I suppose it depends what you're interested in.

I believe I went for 3 nights some years ago and it was enough for me. To be honest I wasn’t a huge fan of the city at the time but do look back with fond memories.

I don’t recall the hotel but it was just across the canal, close to the Mercure hotel and about a 15min walk to the city centre.

I bought a pass that includes hop on hop off bus & entrance into various museums. Saw Klimt’s The Kiss, ate Sachertorte at Cafe Sacher, visit the Spanish riding school.

It's a long way to fly from the UK for two days. It's much further than a lot of people realise.

It's a wonderful city. Avoid Jan it's freezing and summer gets very very hot.

I went in the summer and was surprised how short the flight was ( less than 2 hrs from London) It was very hot.

We bought a Vienna card which covered public transport and gave discounts in various museums.
In 48 hours we did Prater theme park, the Leopold museum, the Albertina museum, the butterfly House, botanical Gardens and Belvedere Palace....but could easily have spent longer in each place apart from the theme park (I think 3 days would have been better on reflection)

Thanks everyone, really helpful. Sadly I am limited to a weekend, may be able to take a Friday or Monday too, to get 3 full days. Sounds like I need it! Planning to go late Spring so hopefully not too hot then.

I’m going for three nights on Friday. Have already booked the Schoenberg and Hofberg Palaces and tickets for a classical music concert. The Christmas markets will also be on.

@FeltCarrot

Are you able to let me know more about your trip?
we are off in a couple of weeks and looking fur any sightseeing or cafe/restaurant suggestions.
thank you!

@fitflop Will try and give you a run down of our trip which was great. We stayed near Westbahnhof station so bought a Vienna city pass to make use of public transport. However our card was never scanned but we had it in case we were ever challenged, The transport system is great and trains/trams were frequent,

We had breakfast at The Golden Egg and Cafe Central, both excellent but be prepared to queue unless you get there early or make reservations. We also had Sacher Torte at the Sacher Cafe, also be prepared to queue. A slice of cake is about 10€ soft drinks 5€, so not cheap but a nice treat.

Try and book tickets for The Belvedere (if you want to see Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss) early.

The Hofberg Palace/ Sisi Museum is near Stephensplatz which is a lovely shopping area.

Schonbrunn Palace is where we saw a classical music concert (I’m not in the least bit musical!) which was fabulous and there is a Xmas market there too.

The Xmas market at Rathausplatz was the biggest with an ice skating track(not a rink). Make sure you have € for the markets for food and drink. The pretzel doughnuts were huge!

Last tip, if you have Netflix, watch The Empress which is all about Sisi and Franz Josef. It’s in German but with English subtitles.

Enjoy, Vienna is stunning!

We are going for 5 nights at new year!!

Crikeyalmighty · 24/11/2024 20:41

Think I will be ok with the cold though as we usually go to Stockholm or Berlin at new year and lived in Copenhagen over 2 winters !! All bloody cold!!

FeltCarrot
Thank you so much.
We are near Mariahilf which I think is central.
I will definitely watch The Empress!

Thanks for all your tips!
Can I ask if you ate in any nice restaurants?

FeltCarrot · 25/11/2024 18:44

We just stumbled across restaurants, lots of schnitzel places and then had bratwurst at the market.
