Lille? Recommended hotels & area?

Hi everyone.
I have Eurostar tickets to go to Lille in a couple after weeks just after the Christmas markets start but not booked a hotel yet.
only want quite a basic hotel as not planning to spend much time in it. But can anyone recommend any hotels and what area is best to stay in?
thanks very much.

Anywhere around Place de la République, or Vieux Lille if you want more residential and upscale restaurants (but not too upscale). Unlike many cities the areas around the mainline train stations are pretty nice. It's also small and walkable.

Rue de la monnaie is the pedestrian street for shopping, and rue du faisan area is good for nightlife.

Oh and the metro is kind of a faff and is more for serving outer areas, you don't really take it a few stops in Central like you would in london.

We stayed in the ibis in the centre. It was nice and about 10 mins walk to the main square.

We were in Lille in the summer for the Olympics, really enjoyed our stay although devoted far too much time to basketball and not enough to sightseeing. I would stay around in the area near the Grand Place square, this is like the centre of old town, pedestrian traffic was busy around there and lots of restaurants, also as you head down to Lille Flandres station it's busy and then it kind of tails off a bit. Google maps shows the busier areas in yellow on the map. Maybe a hotel like Ibis Grand Place would work in terms of price and location. We actually stayed in Novotel Central Gare, which was a really nice hotel, but it's maybe 10 mins from Grand Place and it was quieter walking around there at night.

We stayed in the Adagio when we went for the Xmas market. Free hot drinks and apartment style rooms. Very central for the market.

We've stayed here a couple of times and it was nice enough.

The Ibis is fine. Join Accor - ALL - and you get 10% or so off.

Thanks @MaybeNotBob
