Japan or Vietnam for 10 days in August?

Really want to go to Japan next year with DH. namely Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Have heard that it gets quite hot and humid during the summer. We were in Singapore and it was about 30-32 degrees and was quite humid and we found it alright. I’ve seen things such as cooling wipes to help in the heat. Does anyone have any experience of it? Is it doable in August?

We are also considering Vietnam so Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Halong Bay.

Anyone have any experience with either? Much appreciated 😊

Hi

i think Japan will be hot and humid and it’s also Japanese school holidays so bear that in mind. I’ve not been in August but we’re going in July next year and fully prepared for humidity! If you can go later that would def be better ( we went in October last year to the places you mentioned and the weather was perfect!)

Vietnam is fab, but I think it is rainy season in the North ( Halong Bay, Hanoi) so you may want to focus on Ho Cho Minh and the south if you do need to go in August.

We went to northern Vietnam in August and I would highly recommend it. So cheap too! Hanoi, Halong Bay (check out Vega Cruises) and Hoi An. Go! You will love it. And the people are so nice

Japan will be reallly hot, think 35+.
northern Vietnam is variable in August, ha long bay cruises are often cancelled due to the weather.
as a PP says the south is better.

This year in August it was 40° for almost 2 weeks with 100% humidity in Japan (know people who live in Tokyo and Kyoto). I was there in October when it should have been high teens but it was still 27° - next visit will definitely be in the December to March period!

We went to Japan in August and it was very hot. Bearable in Tokyo but I found it unbearable in Kyoto and we didn’t do as much as we’d hoped to. 10 days isn’t long for Japan.

Rainy season in both North (Hanoi) and South (HCMC).

Weather aside, if it's a choice between Japan or Vietnam, I'd go for Japan, but that's because I've lived there and it is a really wonderful and unique culture.

I was in Japan last August and it was ok, but I'd never do it again in that heat. I think Vietnam is more chilled, you can go to the beach, pool, boat trips etc..( I think central Vietnam is good in the summer). It would definitely be more relaxing rather than looking decent and done up in cities in Japan. Singapore and Borneo may be an option as well?

Both are a long way for 10 days. Not sure there are any direct flights from uk to Vietnam either. DD went to Vietnam in July and was ok. I’d never spend all that money going to Japan in summer. Just unpleasant unless you stay in the Alps.

Thanks everyone!

Central Vietnam is dry in the summer, but hot as Hades! Was over 40 degress when we were there. Have also been to Hanoi in the summer, and had a couple of days of rain, but didn’t really impact our trip.
Have been to Japan in July- hot and humid. We were living in China at the time so we’re used to that kind of weather, but it’s still quite debilitating.

Both very hot. I don't like the heat so would want a different time of year, at least for Japan. Friend had 40 degrees in Vietnam in early April, not sure if they have a cool season unless you're high in the hills.
