South Africa - best time of year

I am planning a trip to South Africa for next year. We want to go to Cape Town, do a safari and finish the trip with a few days on the beach in Mauritius. We are currently looking at May or September (we do not want to go in the school holidays).

Which month would be best? I have looked at average temps but they all seem quite low (e.g., low 20s) year round so I am slightly confused.

Of the 2 options May is probably better. South Africa is vast and Cape Town is definitely more seasonal in terms of temperature variation than Kruger for example. September is the tail end of winter in Cape Town hence the lower temperature , May is the start of winter but more likely to get some nice days I’d say. May is decent time for Kruger Safari as start of dry season, it will be chilly morning and evening but hot in the day and also good for some beach time in Mauritius . Hot weather in Cape Town you’d need to go Dec-Mar but personally I preferred May as it was a bit less busy and you’ll be more focussed on sightseeing as it’s not a beach holiday destination. (I lived in Cape Town for 9 years ) Just my personal opinion but hope that helps .

Thank you! That is exactly the information I was looking for.
