Would you notify the travel company if you had D&V immediately on returning home?

Not looking for compo or anything like that. Just wondering if we should report it to them for public health reasons as likely was picked up at the hotel.

I would contact GP for stool sample and alert council's environment health department. They can test for bugs a long time after you feel better. Then information can be given to public health bodies. This is how they find and report on illnesses contracted abroad. The travel operator may suspect you are after compensation (even if not) but details of your travel and illness will be logged with health authorities so they can see if any patterns or common exposures. This is how travel alerts re health are generated.

You weren't in Crete? There seems to be a big gastroenteritis outbreak in Chania.

Edited

Yep. We were in Crete. Flew into Chania.

I'd report it, the only time I've had confirmed food poisoning (from a wedding) I was contacted by the health authorities and asked to provide a sample to assess the extent of the outbreak.

It's autumn, you were mixing with lots of new people, like nurseries and freshers week it's a cesspit of new germs to you, I wouldn't bother reporting, it's common, at least it happened when you got home! Hope you feel better soon.

Boxblue · 25/10/2024 17:36

I'd have thought it's more likely you caught a bug on the plane or at the airport, but no I wouldn't report.

doodleschnoodle · 25/10/2024 17:40

Yep there's a big outbreak in Chania of Noro or some other gastro thing. Friends of ours got struck down by it too, unfortunately near the start of their holiday. They said there had been 100 cases reported and that was a few days ago, with quite a few hospitalisations.

Why a joke? That’s precisely how it works.

If a food poisoning bacteria is found, Environmental Health will be advised in order to carry out an investigation. That formed a large part of a job I used to do

Most holiday d&v is picked up through swimming in pool or sea rather than food.
Tell Jet2 if you want, I doubt they would do anything.
