Do I need to device to watch in-flight entertainment?

Do you need your own device now to watch in-flight entertainment on a long haul flight these days?

It's many many years since we flew long haul. Due to go to North Carolina next week to see family. Flying BA but I think AA is operating the flight.

Something I read online looked as tho you may now need to stream to a device - last time I flew there were screens in the seat!

Thanks

No. We flew AA earlier this year and you even get given free headphones (I'd use your own though as theirs are rubbish!).

It had been a few years since I had flown long haul and I was impressed with the improvement in entertainment - some really good films and TV shows. I watched Barbie, the Holdovers and some episodes of Slow Horses.

Most airlines will have in flight entertainment. But we did Norwegian to the US a few years ago and they didn’t have screens in the seats, you had to connect and watch through your own device. So that may be what you’ve heard about.

But for BA/AA you should be fine. I would take your own headphones. I have noise cancelling ones, but any you have at home would be better than the ones they give you. I usually download a few podcasts or audiobooks on my phone to have a bit more choice as well, in case there’s nothing I’m that interested in on the in flight options.

Not sure long haul, but there was no inflight entertainment on BA when I went to Greece in June and it was a dream liner size plane. I watched a film on my tablet. Perhaps check with the airline.

I would be amazed if there were not screens in seats on a long haul flight. What is the plane?

ThePoshUns · 18/10/2024 12:59

I flew with virgin to LA last month. Inflight entertainment and headphones were provided

Norwegian are the budget to USA which may answer that?

I flew BA to ISA this year and had screens and headphones provided

Thanks everyone! Just had a momentary panic. I think my daughter is looking forward to the in flight entertainment more than the holiday!

Please can I add - can you connect wireless headphones to the plane tvs? Or do I need to buy wired?

Longhaul with BA you’d expect screens and headphones provided.

Shorthaul you wouldn’t, even on something fairly sizeable like an Airbus A321.

Pineapplecakeee · 25/10/2024 08:02

Not, but American Airlines is the worse airline I traveled with

LIZS · 25/10/2024 08:16

Take your own headphones with a jack fitting, some airlines charge extra.

chergar · 25/10/2024 08:25

We are flying jfk-vegas on AA and the details say you have to have your own personal device but they have inflight entertainment you can stream

Pootle40 · 25/10/2024 08:33

Smaller planes going across the Atlantic ie airbus 320 or Boeing 737 are unlikely to have seat devices. 777, 787, a350 or a380 will.

notimagain · 25/10/2024 09:10

True, but to add to the ?? For info Aer Lingus have IFE on at least some of their A321s that get used across the Atlantic..

TBH there are so many customer options on types these days that the answer to this airline dependent (and to add to the complications some airlines sometimes find a way of mixing Long Haul and Short types on the same route).

The only way of getting an absolutely definite answer is to contact the airline or look at the airline’s website…and even when IFE is promised you on a bad day you might get on board and find the IFE is broken..😩

Penguinsa · 25/10/2024 09:45

Longhaul always have had airline provide screens and headphones which require nothing additional, flew with BA, Air Mauritius, Air Malaysia, etc.

They’ll give you headphones for free unless it’s a very budget flight in which case they might charge a small fee. Wireless headphones definitely don’t connect to any inflight entertainment screens.

Jellifer · 25/10/2024 21:02

My wireless headphones come with a jack that you can plug into the in flight headphone port so can be used for IFA
