Hotels in Washington DC & New York

Next August we are heading to Washington DC and New York - about 5 nights in each. We are a family of 4 and the kids are ages 11 & 12.

Any recommendations for great hotels in these places - preferably within walking distance of lots of tourist attractions.

Any advice?

We recently stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in NYC. Some of the rooms have two double beds and it was spotlessly clean. It's just off Times Square and sort of backs on to the Rockefeller Complex.

Keep in mind it may be scorchingly hot in August in New York.

We always stay at the Hotel Edison on Times Square.

Can't remember the name of our hotel (will look it up) but we stayed in Dupont circle in DC and could walk to the White House.

We stayed in Embassy Suites, DC convention centre. Our room was huge, sitting room with sofa bed and bedroom with two dbl beds, large bathroom. It was walking distance to the metro (from airport) and an easy 15 min walk to the Natural History museum, White House etc. We hired bikes to cycle up and down the National Mall. We had teen boys with us and they loved it.

The Embassy Suites at 22nd street NW in DC is also recommended.

I would double check re the National air and space museum as this has been undergoing huge refurbishment, I think it fully opens in 2026.

New York this year stayed at the Hilton Midtown.

Washington DC I've stayed on a few Holiday Inns.

Either place try to get breakfast included as it will save you a fortune.

In New York remember to include the hotel tax as an extra cost.

Yeah I would choose to go in August but we have a family wedding in New Jersey.

The Hilton Doubletree downtown is great too and very short walk from the ferry that takes you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, etc. It’s not far from Wall Street so you can see the bull, also very close to grand zero and the 9/11 memorial, and to be honest I like walking around New York. It didn’t take long to walk to little Italy/Chinatown, about 20+ minutes. We then got a taxi further uptown to the Empire State, Central park etc one of the days and just spent the day in that area.

I came on here to say the Edison. Don't miss the free cocktail party, which is iirc on Tuesday's.

The George in NYC, great location, quite cool vibes and great breakfast

The Kimpton Capitol Hill in DC, free happy hour wine!! And close to Union Station which has a great food court for budget friendly dinners
