We went last year. Didn't use buses but used the Bolt and Ecab apps to book taxis. That worked really well.
We stayed in Birgu (one of the 3 cities just opposite Valetta), which was really pretty as well. Definitely recommend visiting that if you have the time. You can take one of the little boats across from Valetta (harbour is below the Barakka gardens).

Visited st Paul's summer 2022 - worst holiday everywhere was a building site outside of the hotel

I hope it has improved for you

I have just returned , I stayed in St Paul’s bay too!
We enjoyed Valletta and the silent city (Mdina) also had a day at Popeyes village . I’m not sure what the weather will be like when you go , popeyes village was good as the weather was nice , we walked around the film set and then spend a few hours swimming/sunbathing in the bay .
I agree with the other poster , lots of places looked unfinished but the older towns or city’s were enjoyable to walk around and plenty to see. We found wine and food quite cheap in comparison to other places (€3 for a glass of wine)
We had a total of five days there , the event was two so we would consider returning to Malta to explore the older towns more but probably wouldn’t want more than a week there .

Oh and we used Bolt everywhere , efficient and reasonably priced .

Valetta is beautiful, and I'd go back in a heartbeat, but I wasn't that impressed with the rest of it.

We stayed in Valletta, several years ago. City very walkable, historic buildings, square, port and gardens. Got bus from Valletta to lots of places inc Tarxien, Mdina and Marsaxlokk. If you like preshistory/archaeology, visit Hagar Qim and the 'cart tracks'/Clapham Junction. We also spent a day in Gozo.

Thank you all
Will look at bolt
Weather will be what it will be ...hotel has indoor pool and spa if it's too wet!

Buses are super easy to use and were very cheap. Very often they'd drop you right back at the front door of your hotel too.
