Can you get good last minute holidays?

I really need to get away for a few days - it's been a tough few years.

I have 4 days at the end of October (unfortunately half term). I'm not looking for anything fancy, maybe a city break, or somewhere with history, nature ...

Is it worth waiting to see what I can get at the last minute - are there bargains out there? Or should I just try and book something now?

We have always been super organised and booked way in advance but this summer we had 2 weeks clear and the week before just put the departure date and selected 5* hotels in Europe and sort by price and got a great deal to Spain. Can honestly say it was one of the most brilliant holidays we've had. The hotel was stunning and we could never afford it normally but they obviously just had a room left late. We were treated like royalty and the resort was amazing.

Thanks - that's encouraging.

Have you looked at HolidayPirates?

When is the best time to look to get good deals? Is it best to wait until as close as possible? I don't want to panic and get something now if in fact the prices are at their height

Most airlines have a ‘last minute deal’ page where you can see the cheapest flights for your dates in the next month. Booking hotels and flights together you often get good deals as well. British airways and jet 2 have always been good for us.

Following with interest am looking for a bargain too op. Let is know if you find anything great 😊

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 11/10/2024 08:09

Why don’t you mock up a couple of options for next week and the week after to see what deals are offered. Might give you an idea for the dates that you are interested in?

I always book fairly last minute, no more than 6 weeks before departure, although we don't usually do package holidays, I book flight only and then sort the hotels myself. There are definitely deals to be had even in school holidays, but usually more so if you are very flexible on destination. It's very much a case of supply and demand. I normally have a list of 4 or 5 destinations in mind and then monitor prices a bit obsessively. In August I really wanted to go to Riga, but the prices were consistently £350+ per person, the flight prices never dropped at all, demand was clearly very high, and we went to Bilbao in the end for very much less. Also bargain hunting can require you having the time to research prices several times a week.

Oh yes you definitely can!

For a city break look at BA holidays, the flight plus hotel option is often barely more than flight only.

Jet2 and TUI also fab. If you'd like sun, and it's just 4 days check out anywhere with frequent flights like Tenerife or Mallorca.

If you're booking things separately avoiding Saturday nights might keep the price down.

Booking now will give you more choice as flights will fill up and now is pretty much 'last minute' for the travel industry.
