Canaries - does this exist?

Looking to relax for a week in early December, swimming, reading, eating. Somewhere warm. Due to availability of flights from local airport the Canaries is the only option. I'm looking for a hotel with a heated pool, a handful of restaurants nearby, with sea views BUT somewhere not too touristy.

Went to Tenerife a couple of years ago (for 3rd time). Researched it before I went and chose Costa Adeje as various articles/videos said it was on a quieter side, so I was shocked at the wall to wall tourism. You would never have known you were in Spain.

Does anyone know of a hotel with a great, heated pool, near some restaurants, but in a quieter destination? Have been to most of the Canary Island and I speak some Spanish. Am well travelled so trekking across an island or having to catch a ferry would be no bother.

Hotel Beatrix Playa in Matagorda, Lanzarote may fit the bill perhaps?

(Might be Beatrix Plaza)

The canaries are wall to wall tourism though.
If you want Spanish and rustic you won't get a hotel with a heated pool, a sea view and nice restaurants.

Los gigantes in Tenerife is a quiet resort barely any tourists when we went in sept last year. Can't advise on a heated pool though

TeenToTwenties · 05/10/2024 20:29

Matagorda is touristy but smaller than many other places. It is next to airport though so if you don't like planes not such a good idea. (We don't mind them, but just remembered others might be less keen!)

Google tells me these have heated pool and sea view

Landamar Costa los gigantes

Royal sun apparently has heated pools. Views here are spectacular as we stayed there but a bit of a trek to restaurants and back to the hotel

Las Galletas is very Spanish but I don't know what the hotels are like, its more like the sort of place you go to self cater and scuba dive.

What about La Gomera via ferry from Tenerife?

Or inland Andalucia? Weather should be decent, very Spanish but you'll probably need an indoor pool for it to be warm and open.

It sounds like you want the tourist facilities but no other tourists around.

We has a week at the Radisson Blu in Costa Teguise. The hotel was brilliant, adult only, good service, good food and every room has a large balcony with sunbeds. The area wS a purpose built resort, so although it had loads of bars, restaurants and entertainment it was all a bit fake and lacking in character. We had a trip into Arriciffe, in the centre is a high rise hitel, the only hi rise on the island. It is 5▪︎ We only had a drink in the top floor cocktail bar, but the views were outstanding, the city is an authentic working city. V close to the airport, a beach next to it and a spa. Might be worth having a look. www.aghotelspa.com/en

I cannot think of anything more touristy than flying to a warm country in December, which you otherwise wouldn't be visiting, to lie by a pool, swim, read, and eat. Restaurants need customers to keep going. Heated pools cost a fortune to run and you tend to only find them in bigger hotels. 95% of the guests will be other northern Europeans who are there for exactly the same thing.

By all means look for somewhere more luxurious (if your budget will permit), to reduce the chances of meeting loud people in football shirts or whatever, but don't kid yourself. You're not going on a voyage of cultural discovery, you're going to switch off from cold wet Blighty with a cocktail and a Sally Rooney. Which is fine, I enjoy that too, but if the place is indeed "wall-to-wall tourism", you are very much part of that problem.

There’s a ‘posh end’ to Costa Adeje isn’t there?
The area around the Duque shopping circle I thought.

We were at the GF Isabel there in March. It has a large heated sheltered pool warm enough for me to jump in and I’m usually the one you see taking one step at a time , wincing and wondering why I’m bothering kind of bather.

Cordial Mogan Playa Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria.

minipie · 08/10/2024 01:08

If you really want to avoid tourists then I suggest looking for a villa with a heated pool, somewhere inland. Accept you need to drive to restaurants and beaches.

Lovethatforyouhun · 08/10/2024 09:57

I second Cordial Mogan Playa Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria.

Santa Catalina - Las Palmas

Hideaway - La Caleta.

Botanical - puerto cruz

whatifshejust · 08/10/2024 14:45

Thanks to everyone who replied with specific hotels.
@friendlycat @Lovethatforyouhun Cordial Mogan Playa Puerto de Mogan is a fantastic call, as is Santa Catalina Las Palmas. Will probably go for one of those.

Puerto Calero on Lanzarote is lovely. there is a lovely marina with some shops and restaurants. If you want more authentic then you can walk across the cliff to Playa Quemada where there are 3 restaurants and a handful of cottages.
You can also walk the other way along the cliffs to Puerto del carmen where there are many restaurants and beaches. You cant hen get the water taxi back again.
I can't recommend a hotel as we always stay in private villas in Puerto calero. We love it so much we have been about 9 times over the last 12 years.

snoopyfanaccountant · 08/10/2024 14:53

Have a look at Hotel Costa Calero in Lanzarote.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 08/10/2024 17:33

I'm not sure if you were saying you wish to avoid Tenerife again but I'm staying here this December and assumed it would have a heated pool and doesn't seem to be in the thick of the action.
