Has anyone found a hidden camera in their hotel room?

I keep reading horror stories about people finding hidden cameras in their hotel room. So now when I stay somewhere I thoroughly check the room out.

My question is, has anyone actually come across a hidden camera?

Was it a tv that turns into a mirror when off?

It was too long ago for one of those, I think. It was also a very old-fashioned place - all the furniture and fittings were from the 70s.

Am over 50. No one wants to see me strip. Grin. No I don't bother. I do, however, wash the kettle 5 times after seeing some dubious posts.

Why wouldn't they? Pervs are pervs.

Never even thought about it. And if someone is going to get their jollies off seeing my flabby white arse then that’s up to them.

😂

Well, quite.

It's not a matter of whether or not the person being spied on would be considered physically attractive or not, it's the fact that she (usually) doesn't know she's being spied on.

It's about transgressiveness and power. That's the sexual thrill. It's called voyeurism.

My friend had her little sister and daughter filmed going to the bathroom in an air BnB that had an en suite in the children’s room. It was so indiscreet she found the camera herself the first time she used that bathroom. The owner served 8 months after the police searched his house and found over 200 hours worth of footage of multiple children using that bathroom. Worryingly he has a very public job for a newspaper now, they know his history and don’t care. He tells people he was in hospital when he was actually in prison

That's horrible, but my comment was about people allegedly doing weird things with kettles in hotel rooms, not cameras in Airbnbs. 🙏 I know the latter are quite common, probably mostly owners who genuinely, if misguidedly, want to keep an eye on their property.

Agreed. But I think sometimes cameras are as much about control/ monitoring behaviour. I’m not necessarily condoning that either.

I think if you run a hotel/ operate an air bnb you have to accept there are risks that come with that. I’m not really so sure that vast numbers of guests are urinating in kettles or loading up their car boot with toilet tissue or whatever other fears haunt these operators.

I found one in my home after my divorce, it was there for six months.
I posted it back to him.

Still can't quite get over it.

“You know what really boils my piss?

Hotel kettles”.

A friend of mine stayed in a holiday cottage with her partner and children about 10 years ago.

About a year after she was contacted by the police. Another guest had found a camera in the radio alarm clock by the bed.

The owner of the cottage had hours and hours of footage, including some of my friend and her family.

He went to prison and she got a big payout.

In a car park in Wales the card out of a mini camera wa lying on the ground.. Son loaded it up showed a man putting it up in a children's bedroom, adjusting it then leaving. Then showed a family, two little girls running in and bouncing on the beds. Suitcases. Son with Google maps or something found the address, Airbnb Exeter area. We didn't watch any more just wrote down the address, printed off the house, map and I took it down to the police station. Never heard another word.

Yes an Airbnb childs room with bunk beds. Found a sim card in a car park. Showed it to techy son. He found the file, watched a man fitting it. Then a family arriving. Two little girls excited to have bunks. Son found the house down in the Bristol area. I noted the address. Took the card and address to the police.

You found a SIM card and your first thought was to hack into it?

Do you know you’ve posted twice with slightly different details? Such as location?

Really. Zombie thread. Apologies.

I came to see if I should be concerned about hidden cameras and now I’m leaving with a new fear unlocked about kettles 😳

Well yes it could have been pictures that someone would have been devastated to lose. I'd also check a wallet or handbag if I found it in a car park and try to find the owner.

What in Bristol or Exeter? 🫢

Also, just thinking about the legalities of it - I'd say a home owner has the right to install hidden cameras (although morally they should tell you about it). I'm not sure if by paying for a room in a hotel for the night it is considered your residence for the night or whatever.

Plus the inevitable PR disaster for a hotel chain if it was discovered they were spying on their customers would be immense. Although it could be just one employee, the chances of them having the time/ privacy to carry it out without being spotted by another employee is small.

Only in communal spaces, at the most. They could find themselves in a great deal of trouble for installing them in bedrooms or bathrooms. But any cameras found and reported could at least lose them their listing.

I bring Milton tablets with me to hotels, so I can sterilise the kettle, utensils and cutlery.

Myblueclematis · 22/06/2025 08:31

I stayed at a hotel (Travelodge) last weekend. After previously reading posts on here, I boiled the kettle a couple of times, tried to check around the room and bathroom to see anything suspicious but found nothing.

I did take my own mug and spoon after reading cleaners used the same cloth for cleaning the bathroom as washing the mugs. 😧

I will say though, the hotel was very clean, the room was nice, receptionists helpful, bed very comfortable and I quite enjoyed my brief stay there. Would book a Travelodge again if needed.

Can’t be arsed to get out of bed.

i also never use the mugs or the teaspoons in the room. A colleague of mine said he blocked the loo in the Croydon Hilton once and chopped it up with the teaspoon and then rinsed the spoon in the sink and put it back! Why he didn’t bin the spoon I have no idea. That stuff is never put through a dishwasher, the cleaners just rinse the mugs.

This isn't true re mugs, I've seen them being removed on trolleys and replaced in some places.

That spoon story is gross!!

This is my viewpoint too. Of course it wouldn't be pleasant to find out someone had been filming but I'm not going to stress massively about the remote possibility and if it happens i would be cross but, I don't think, distressed.

Hidden cameras in hotel rooms are about as likely as a two-way mirror in the hotel room loo... zero. They've just conspiracy theories that have been shared a million times.

Are you serious? There’s a high profile case in N.Ireland at the moment where a 4* star hotel employee had hidden cameras in many rooms and had film of over 70 people on holidays.

Ofcourse it happens, there are perverts everywhere why wouldn’t a hotel be a prime target… head in sand much.
