Naples stay

We will be having a weekend in Naples at end of a trip.
What is the best area to stay in if we want to see the main sights?

We'll already have done pompei and Vesuvius etc so really just want to see the city

We stayed opposite the cathedral (centre storico). 2 females so was very conscious of safety and felt very safe here. Don't stay near the train station. The Spanish quarter is supposed to be good but not ideal for lone females.

It was also walking distance to the main big sights and the receptionist was so helpful with directions and recommendations. Taxi to the airport was about 15 mins

We stayed in Relais Castel Nuovo which is opposite the port. Near Metro, airport bus, not far from Spanish Quarter. It felt very safe.

Thanks I'll take a look at those suggestions

I too would say look at the hotels along the port. It’s easy to walk almost anywhere from there. Definitely avoid the central train station area.

Naples is one of my favourite places, make sure to research where to go in advance to make the most of it.

We really enjoyed the Underground visit, and taking funicular to top of the hill and walking down through the Spanish Quarter. We did a free walking tour of the historical centre. Didn't have time for the archeological museum though which is meant to be amazing. I kept a close eye on my stuff and had a sturdy cross body bag, but honestly only felt unsafe when we had to cross a big road - the traffic is mad! Dd was there in June and mentioned "fireworks" where they were staying - in an AirBNB near the station - which are apparently used by local drug dealers to signify things. They triple locked the door at night but otherwise had no issues.

We will be there for a night next year - flying in and out of Naples on way to Calabria - and have rebooked our same apartment from last year.

Spaccanapoli - it’s a very long, straight street. Have always felt pretty safe along here because it’s so busy and lots of great restaurants, little shops and sights either side and end. It’s right in the heart of everything.

Just avoid the train station area!

Did you know about Salerno airport? It’s further south and opened in July. Tiny airport but served by EasyJet. Flights were cheaper than Naples too!

We stayed in the Spanish quarter, lots of good options for eating nearby and close to the Maradona mural. Hotel was lovely, but not cheap, it was called NapoliMia. There was a metro almost outside the hotel, but the metro trains felt infrequent, often 10+ mins between trains which sometimes felt like forever. Walking distance to Centro storico. You have to be wary of pickpockets unfortunately.

We are going next year. Staying in Amalfi for 6 nights and Chiaja Hotel de Charme in Naples for one night on the way back. It was a bit of a random decision, think it was one that Rick Steves had in his guidebook. Hope it will be ok. I thought it looked ok location for port and town..I really want to see the veiled christ more than anything, my husband thought it probably wasn't such a good location for that, but it won't deter me!
