Friends not paying for villa

We booked a villa holiday to Fiji with some friends. We paid for the villa on our credit card and told friends they could pay us when the payment was due. They said sure.

Payment date has gone so paid out of savings. Sent a reminder saying please can you pay me the £1,000 for the villa as I’ve paid it out of my account. Friends said sure sorry been so busy with work.

Still no sign of money and now I could have been earning interest etc on that money. I think friends are a bit tight on dosh as they didn’t book flights for ages because wanted to wait til pay day to pay for flights.

This is such a bizarre holiday from the uk. So many simpler options and there’s no direct flight!!! The obvious way is via Los Angeles with Air New Zealand. It takes forever! No one would think this was worth it, I’m doubting if there is this holiday! The flights are £thousands. No one living month to month would do this. Anyone contemplating it would only ask very well off friends and know they had the money.

Maybe the OP is in Australasia???? Perfectly normal to travel to Fiji from there.

"The point is not the far flung destination. It’s the choice of a far flung destination by people who are not paying up! Of course people go to far away places but don’t have the anxiety of non paying friends because it’s not a hugely expensive snd lengthy flight time. That’s all. Having been to the Antarctic and Easter Island I get travelling but this seems too much for the friends."

They might have plenty of money, you've just assumed they haven't because they've not paid up. Maybe they are CFs, maybe they think it's not a massive deal or a "no rush" type situation.

You made out like it costs a bomb and takes "forever" to get to Fiji. You have to change in LA omg, nobody would do this trip etc etc. Nonsense

I have a suggestion that works well, even though it's more of a psychological tactic.

Create a shared spreadsheet, perhaps in Google Sheets, so everyone can access it via a shared link.

List all names, including yours. Mark those who have paid in green and those who haven't in red. Send both a screenshot of the sheet and the link.

Along with that, send a firm, simple message, like: "Payment Deadline by 27th September."

Are they all in a WhatsApp group so that everyone has visibility?

Send them a message to say that as they haven't paid that you are changing the name on the booking to other people.

This!!

Excellent.

Definitely recommend a money sharing/bill splitting app like one mentioned above for the holiday spends. Makes it much easier all round.

Wonder if one of them is on MN.......

Yourpartnerisacf · 23/09/2024 19:18

Phew, but took a lot of waiting. I definitely think you should bear that in mind on the holiday. You paid holiday and they paid you back eventually... but meals and activities split the bill or say they can pay and you pay them back as you paid initial deposit...

Glad to hear it!
