Was going to try Gran Canaria but have heard it can be a bit meh.

Have been to Lanzarote but wouldn't cross it off the list. Just me and the happy. Not looking for fancy. Just clean and comfy for a weeks R&R.

Thanks

Gran Canaria is lovely. Have you written it off because someone told you it was meh?

No, not totally written off but I don't know much about the island and not sure where to stay. I am a bit of a creature of habit when it comes to hols. I read the reviews and the neg ones just stay with me 😕

I really like corralejo in fuerteventura - it has an international feel to it, not just full of Brits and all day breakfasts, but depends what you’re after.

We've done Lanzarote 3 times in 3 years because also creatures of habit 🙂 love Playa Blanca for a warm chilled week when gloomy in the UK!

I second Corralejo. It has a slightly hippy vibe, no culture just hoards of restaurants and a bit of live music. A range of hotels from plain to fancy.
It's similar to Playa Blanca .

Ok so we have decided on Gran Canaria as flights are a great price. Thinking Puerto Rico/Mogan area but have no idea really.

Any recommendations for hotel or apartment please?

Mogan is lovely

Las Palmas is great

I have a place in Playa Blanca in Lanzarote.
Love love love it.
But l do love Corallejo in Fueterventura.. especially The dunes.
Not keen on Grand Canaria and Tennerife more commercialised for me.
I prefer laid back.

Puerto Mogan is nice, lovely marina and beach. You can also get the bus to Mogan itself and perhaps even further up the west side of the island, which is really off the beaten track.

I think Puerto Rico is a bit 'Brits Abroad', but Playa Amadores has a beautiful beach, but it's quite small, I don't know anything about the hotels in any of these places as I went with DP who was doing an activity holiday and in the daytime I went to different places on the bus. Meloneras, west of the Maspalomas dunes has some nice hotels and is more upmarket than the east side of the Dunes in Maspalomas, the 'meh' part is Playa del Ingles.

All of the Canary Islands are pretty much what you make of it. If you want 'Blackpool with sunshine', there is a lot of that, but there's also a lot of parts that's nothing like that at all. We've been to Gran Canaria as well as Lanzarote, Tenerife and all of the Balearic Islands but we always go to more laid back places that attract more international, including Spanish, tourists, never go AI and always visit the capitals and interiors of the islands, so have a holiday that's nothing like the stereotypical 'lay by the pool getting pissed and only move to fight over chips at the buffet' holiday.

For those of you that have recommended Corralejo, can you recommend anywhere to stay please?

We visited Puerto de Mogan on a very recent trip to Gran Canaria, our first visit. We thought it was lovely, great looking beach, pretty marina and very charming. No recommendations for places to stay or eat as we didn’t stay there but seriously considering staying there for our next visit.

Puerto de Mogan is lovely. Both the Cordial Mogan playa and the Radisson are great hotels.

BridgetJonesBigPants · 13/09/2024 06:46

Another recommendation for the Radisson at Puerto Mogan. It's a pretty village, other towns in the touristy side of the island were definitely less charming.
