holidays without crippling single occupancy surcharge?

A friend of mine is in her late 50s, single, no kids, doesn't have a huge amount of money. Would love to go away but finds that once the single occupancy surcharges are added on, the cost is prohibitive. Any ideas please?

nope but will watch with interest as I have this problem when booking holidays with my dd as I'm the only adult.

Basically don't do a package holiday would be my advice. Look at cheap airlines and book direct with hotels into single rooms

yeah, I agree Crunchie but this friend wouldn't arrange travel independently. And even if I did it for her, she's so lacking in confidence she'd need the reassurance of a tour rep when she got there. I reckon a coach-type tour would be good for her as she'd find it easier to meet other people. I suspect it's not going to be possible to find anything which doesn't sting single people, but thought I'd ask MN as someone somewhere usually has the answer!
