Anyone been at that time of year (early Jan). I know it will be cold!

also any recommendations for a super safe area for a hotel as it will be just me and DD and would like to be able to go out in evenings without too much worry.

Yes, it's very cold, although lately you might get the odd warmer day every now and then.

There are lots of neighbourhoods that wouldn't be considered dangerous as such, but ime you have to mind what you're about all the time, even in the poshest areas.

If you tell me what kinds of things you're interested in doing, I might be able to suggest some good areas to look around in.

It will be cold but fun. We always stayed at the Hotel Eddison on Times Square. A busy area near all the theatres. Felt very safe.

We have been before (about 9 years ago) and stayed about a 2 min walk from Times Square but it felt a little bit unsafe, the actual road it was on rather than Times Square itself.

Hoping to get tickets to Hamilton and will be going to museums etc, Brooklyn bridge, highline and maybe a bus tour.

Very cold meaning thermal base layers, jumper, jeans, waterproof boots and a good coat? The padded type? Hat and gloves?
or colder than that?
(I hate being cold so this is a big consideration, we can’t go any other time though)

Sooooo cold! 🥶 what are you looking to do? I'd been thinking of going the same sort of time and had planned staying near the bottom left of central park to be near the museums x

That sounds about right - boots, hat and gloves need to be warm as well as waterproof.

With the activities you've mentioned, you could consider Murray Hill, Kips Bay and Gramercy Park - much calmer and more residential than Times Square.
