Which have been the most amazing holidays you have been?

We have done lots of lovely holidays; but I will say the most amazing one have been WA swimming with whales sharks and Japan. There is something really fascinating about Japan; it is so different to many other places and there is so much to see and do.

We've just got back from Costa Rica, it was incredible! We did zip lining, caving, saw a sea turtle nesting, kayaked through the jungle, went snorkelling, and saw so much wildlife.. I can't rate it highly enough as a destination!

We've been so fortunate over the years and ticked off a lot of "exotic" holidays like Kenya, Thailand, Borneo, Costa Rica, the Arctic .... yep, polar bear watching has been ticked off the bucket list.

But this year, we managed to get a bargain self catering bungalow in Bude, Cornwall and I have to stay, we had the most incredible time.

We went to an aqua park, paddle boarding, days on the beach, body boarding and played on a Nintendo Wii that had at the property. It seemed less rushed because we had our own little base and we had more spare money to spend on every activity you can imagine!

Namibia is incredible for wildlife. Big fan of Finland too, both summer and winter.

Ooh can I pick your brains? We're planning a trip next summer. Do you have any recommendations? Did you book thru a travel agent?

Had wonderful holidays in S.A. & Galapagos, & Southern Africa.

China could have been wonderful, but not with the world's worst tour guide.

The best was actually a cheap week in Jordan !

We'd booked a package expecting to be part of a group, but there was just 2 of us & our personal guide/driver. He was absolutely wonderful, lots of added extras to the official itinerary, & the tour ended with dinner at his home with his wife & family.

What were your unmissables when you went to Japan? We are off in 6 weeks time.

To answer the question - our hits have been as far apart as Namibia and Northumberland! Just returned from a camping trip down the road in Cadgwith in Cornwall - it was amazing! Further afield interrailing as adults has been great.
We tend to like culture or wide open spaces. We don't really do pools.- tho I feel I may need that kind of holiday after Japan!

Some of the ones we really liked are:

Australia: stay at Wilson Island in the Great Barrier Reef

Cambodia: visiting Angkor Wat

Egypt: private guided tour across Cairo, Luxor, Nile cruise to visit all the temples and monuments

Japan: Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Osaka

Morocco: private guided tour through Marrakech, Fez, Atlas Mountains, Air Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, Todra Gorge

New Zealand: 2 weeks self driving in the South Island

Tanzania: safari on the Serengeti with hot air balloon ride

US/Canada: Vancouver city stay followed by a cruise to Alaska (including Glacier Bay and stay at Denali National Park)

steadywinner · 02/09/2024 18:21

Safari in Kenya, without a doubt the most memorable.

longdistanceclaraclara · 02/09/2024 18:24

For different reasons:

Zanzibar
RV in the US Rockies
Hawaii
Eleuthera

Japan and Iceland are really high on my list. I expected to love them and did.

The place that really blew me away and exceeded all expectations was Taiwan. It’s an amazing destination and I don’t understand why it doesn’t get more western tourists.

Yes of course! I'm still over excited about it so happy to blather on 🤣 I actually did a quick post about the company we used (link below) but feel free to to message me with any questions about anything Costa Rica related!

There are lots we could not see as no long enough but loved: Nara, Miyayina. Hiroshima peace park and museum, Fushimi Inari, shopping and visiting some free temples in Tokyo, Meiji Jingu, Senso Ji. Just loved the variety, culture, customer service, how clean it was, shopping or window shopping

Most amazing

Bora Bora - a nightmare to get to, but worth it. The most beautiful place.
Maldives
Bermuda- loved this place more than I thought I would. People were lovely and beaches were gorgeous

I'm loving reading where everyone has been.

We took our (then) 3 year old to Thailand and Malaysia for a month earlier this year which was incredible. I'm 25 and have travelled to 37 countries and this was definitely my favourite trip so far! Were going to Lapland in December which will be a huge bucket list ticked off too :)

reluctantbrit · 03/09/2024 07:40

Hawaii (Big Island) and Maui - if it wouldn't be a 24hr journey and expensive I would go again in a heartbeat

Thailand - an amazing private tour

Quebec in autumn

Boston and Newport/RI with a short stint in Cape Cod

More closer to home
Prague
Amsterdam (you need to go away from the tourist path)
Northern Germany and Baltic Coast
Florence

We had an amazing 3 weeks in Japan. Loved it.

But favourite amazing holidays..

Vancouver and Vancouver island. Tofino is magical on Vancouver island.

Peru 20 years ago....Macchu pichu wasn't overcrowded, we walked in on the trail.

Thailand 35 years ago, wandering around the northern hills.

Russia 5 years ago, visiting friends. Such an interesting country.

HotHotChilli · 03/09/2024 08:03

I am lucky to say I have been on some amazing holidays, but my first amazing holiday was 30 years ago, I always had a longing to go to Colorado and we did for 3 weeks.

The organisation was quite difficult as we could not find a tour package so did it all ourself. This was the days before Mr Google and the internet was patchy to say the least! So maps, books and telephone calls after 6pm to save on the cost to book hotels car hire etc.

It was amazing with really only American visitors to many areas, and not that busy. Fabulous time.

Have had many great holidays in Japan (all over from top to bottom started going 17 years ago ).

Plenty to Thailand/Malaysia/Sri Lanka. Other places in Asia I did not like so much, but thinking in the 1990's we did some pretty epic travelling in the States all planned by us.
