America lake house recommendations!

We are looking to go for two weeks for Easter holidays in April 2025. Does anyone have any recommendations of lakes with houses to rent in America. Family holiday with boys age 4 and 2 thanks mumsnetters 😁✈

Budget and location?

Eg New Hampshire has tonnes of lovely lakes, but the water won't be warm at Easter...

Ideally I was after some suggestions for location. Maybe around 4k to 5k for accommodation. Again I have no idea of this until I can narrow down the lake!

At Easter I would be looking from Washington DC and southwards, eg: Lake Murray in South Carolina, Lake Oconee or Lake Rabun in Georgia, or Chikamauga Lake in Tennessee which is close to Chattanooga. A lot of those lakes down south are reservoirs formed by dams in the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) and they're beautiful but very long and thin and sometimes with very steep sides, so not shallow with sandy beaches like you might find elsewhere.

I've heard there are some gorgeous lakes in the Ozarks but I've never been there.

If you want the Northeast lakes surrounded by pine forests like Lake Winnepesaukee or Squam Lake in New Hampshire, the water will be absolutely freezing in April.
