Mid October Rhodes or Turkey?

Scottishskifun · 31/08/2024 20:29

We are torn between going to Rhodes or to Fethiye region Turkey in mid October. Its before the English holidays (we live in Scotland school terms are different and we fly from England) so prices are mostly similar for AI which are 4/5* (Rhodes is £100 cheaper).

DH prefers Rhodes as thinks we will be able to go exploring more (have DS1 5 and DS2 who is 2) as 25ish is more comfortable.
I prefer the idea of Turkey as both DS's just want to be swimming all the time or having a ice cream and from google it looks to be a bit warmer of 27.
The 10am rule for pools in Rhodes was a pain with 2 young children who are awake from 7 last time we went.

Any been around this time?
What would your preference be?

Not been to either in October but had ruled them out thinking the pools will be freezing? If anyone can shed light then I would love to know. Weather in Fethiye in October looks like it can be really mixed (I scoured the trip advisor Weather boards)

When we went to Rhodes it was 26 beginning of October.
We do live in Scotland though so pool temps to my kids as long as its above 22 air temp they are happy (we take wetsuit swimsuits with us).

Both hotels have a backup indoor pool too.

Good to know! I think I worry about spending loads on a 'hot holiday' and it not being hot enough?! We are Scottish too so no stranger to swimming in the baltic North Sea but I want hot if I brave a plane with small children IYSWIM?!

I've been to Turkey in October and whilst there gone over to Rhodes. In terms of weather and considering holiday price rises/quality I'd go to Rhodes

Skyrain · 31/08/2024 20:53

I have been to the Fethiye region of Turkey in the Scottish October holidays and weather is lovely. Pools cooler than summer but fine for swimming and sea temp is warm.

Beginningless · 31/08/2024 20:55

We went to Antalya last Oct, Scottish school hols too. It was 28-35 degrees most days, more than hot enough for us!

HappierTimesAhead · 31/08/2024 20:57

Okay, you've got me trawling the holiday websites now!

minipie · 31/08/2024 21:00

You need to look at chance of rain/sun, not just temperature. I’d pick Turkey, as long as there is a heated pool. Cyprus is also a good option weather wise (sea warmer than pool).

We went to Kos the very last week of October last year. It was lovely warm and sunny the entire week! I'd worried about it in the build up but it was fantastic

BoredAuditor · 01/09/2024 10:08

Been to Rhodes and don't recall the 10am sunbed rule....

There's hardly any distance between them - they're just across the water from each other so weather will be similar.

I'd research what's in each area and go from there.

I've been to Rhodes in October. Pool was chilly but the sea was lovely. We hired a car for 3 days in the middle to go to Rhodes Town and Lindos and other places as we got a bit bored in the resort. Make sure you are near a nice beach - check it is nice!

Henleylady · 01/09/2024 10:32

Makes sure you are on the South coast of Rhodes - a lot less windy.

Scottishskifun · 01/09/2024 10:34

Thanks beach is less of issue whilst DH and I love swimming in the sea DS1 hates walking into the sea and DS2 hates sand so we just avoid the meltdowns 🙈

@BoredAuditor that's interesting the hotel we went to last year (a 5*) the pools weren't open til 10am, had the same in Crete at a different hotel chain which was a pain with DS1

What I'm saying is the sea might be much warmer than the pool- and so much nicer. I couldn't get in the pool it was too cold. So having a nice beach will give you options.

Sounds like a heated pool will be a must if the sea is out for your family.

OP, I've also given advice on a hotel in Fethiye on another thread where someone was trying to weigh up hotels in Fethiye. We stayed in the Letoonia. It's on the holiday board. You could do a day trip across to Rhodes from there.

BoredAuditor · 01/09/2024 13:19

Thread called "Club Letoonia or Tui Blue Tropical" if that's any use

Thank you will go check it out we had seen the Letoonia hotel and it looks fab we were slightly put off by the transfer time and no kids club for youngest DS (we have no family support and DS1 hates babysitters so our only chance of couples downtime is 2 hour slots for 3 times on holiday)

😂 so in a weird twist we ended up booking Cyprus! We had initially ruled it out based on it being considerably more then Greece and Turkey but a deal popped up which hit all of our requirements including indoor pool if weather isn't great and childcare clubs available if we want.

Bizarrely, we're considering cyprus for late October. Which hotel have you booked OP?

We have booked the Atlantica Mare Village Paphos.
It looked good for the age of my children and has its own baby club. Also has a swimming cove which might help getting mine into the sea and a bus stop nearby for easy access into Paphos. The flight times aren't great (very late) so we booked a private transfer as the deal was good.

Not sure if it will do the same for subsequent weeks/English half term is the 28th I think (scottish holidays are sooner).

Thanks OP. I know the one. It looks gorgeous but we're hoping not to spend that much. Are you doing a package?

Scottishskifun · 15/09/2024 10:55

@BoredAuditor yep we booked through first choice but we got it on deal for 2.6k for 4 of us it is less then a month before we go and I had also ruled it out for some reason it massively dropped in price yesterday!

BoredAuditor · 15/09/2024 11:34

I'll have a look- thanks 😊

HappierTimesAhead · 15/09/2024 20:03

Oooh, it looks gorgeous and the little spot for sea swimming looks fab!
