What would you do if you had one day in South Wales?

We're on holiday in Wales and the beach we had planned to visit today is actually not dog friendly!

So, if you were in South Wales today (close to the Gower) what would you do? We are 1 adult, 2 dc under 10 and ddog. Kids love nature and bugs and beaches. Ddog is quite old so can't manage a big hike. Thanks!

Go to a dog friendly beach? There are plenty around Gower with year round dog access.

AlisonDonut · 29/08/2024 09:36

Yes, do that ^

Worms Head walk (with dog in lead)? Day trip to Tenby?

piefacedClique · 29/08/2024 09:40

Three cliffs…. I’d park at Parkmill and walk out along the river. Or park at Southgate and walk down from there. Places to eat at both start points. Some places do coaststeering around Fall Bay and MewSlade. Or get a surf lesson at Caswell? Lunch at Langland bras if follow the coast path to mumbles and eat there?

Care to recommend one? There's loads to choose from and wondered if anyone had personal recommendations.

@piefacedClique I was thinking about 3 cliffs, is it hard to access? Is there a lot of beach at high tide?

Go to Tenby for the day. You can sit up too with dog while your kids play on the harbour beach.
It's so lovely for pottering around 😊

I liked Oxwich when the kids were young, big beach so easy to spot them off exploring.

They tell me now that I've traumatised them getting them to walk so far along the beach to find the perfect spot 😂 but so many people just plonk themselves straight in front of the car park and then are like sardines so close together.

Go to The Hub at Southgate for a lovely coffee and then walk the path to Pobbles beach. Ask them for directions. I did this a few days ago. Beach is beautiful with caves for kids to explore.

There is a lovely pub for lunch when you walk back. Walk is lovely about 20 minutes along a path and then opens up to an amazing beach.

There is some parking near The Hub. Coffee shop also has a lovely gift shop.

All dog friendly.

We were in Tenby yesterday and there were so many dogs! Beautiful coastline to walk around and definitely dog friendly. I'd actually avoid Tenby altogether if you don't like dogs.

@Oreosandwich Three cliffs is super easy. There are multiple ways of accessing. I personally prefer parking in Parkmill and walking across the bridge anlong the river Ilston and out in to the floodplain that way. Grab a coffee and a sausage roll at the little Bakery in the Heritage Centre. Can be accessed whatever the ride and plenty of space either on the beach or the floodplain. There are loads of other access points too. The walk from Southgate across the golf course or along west cliff are lovely too. Alternatively if the tide is out you can park up towards three cliffs campsite and walk down via Tor Bay which is lovely too and then walk back via three cliffs and along the floodplain. There is a path back up to the carpark from there.

Don't know re dogs, but Rhossili beach is the most beautiful place on earth to me. Have coffee at either of the two cafes at the top of the cliffs. They are both very good.

We went to 3 cliffs. It's absolutely stunning 😍

I'd go on a trip to skomer island and see the puffins!

piefacedClique · 29/08/2024 17:03

Which way did you walk down @Oreosandwich

@piefacedClique We parked at the field in Parkmill with the little ice cream truck. The man in there directed us to the beach along the most beautiful route. On the way back we went via the castle and got slightly lost on the golf course! But it was an amazing day and the dc declared it 'best beach ever' 😁

Glad you enjoyed it. It was the magic of three cliffs that made me move from England to South wales and I have never regretted it. Also highly recommend Tor Bay., Phwll Du, Mewslade and fall bay, all on Gower, and all dog friendly. Enjoy your holidays. 😀
