EMERGENCY CHILD'S PASSPORT

Did an extremely silly thing and didn't realise our 11 yr old's passport had expired by a week when we went to check in for our flights on Wednesday afternoon on Tuesday morning. Went to Peterborough on Wednesday morning for a 8am appointment and our application is received / in progress. We're praying that it comes back on time for us to book another flight and join the holiday party. I keep reading conflicting things about the timeframe we can expect... has anyone experienced this and what kind of time from the appointment did the passport come back, please? It's a straight forward renewal... have read in some cases it's 2 days, but this can't be right - can it?! Thanks SO much for any insights!

Oh god I don’t have any current experience of wait times and definitely not for an emergency passport, fingers crossed it comes with enough time for you to be able to join the others 😭 where are they? Are there flights available over the next few days?

Lougle · 23/08/2024 14:02

I think there's a 5 day wait period for children's passports, in addition to postage, so likely 7 days.

It won't help you now, but when you get the passport through, add a date in your calendar that is 9 months before it expires with 'renew passport'. After reading several similar threads, I have done that for the whole family. Also the GHIC cards.

Wait, now I’ve said that I do remember a similar thing happened to a friend just before the May half term and she went to the place to book her son in for an emergency passport, they said it would take one week but it ended up taking an extra 2 days.
sorry, not a good update however it was a while ago now and it’s constantly changing, I’d imagine you’re past the bulk of people who are going to be in this position during the school holidays (as in, it’s over halfway through the holidays now) so fingers crossed it’s speedy procedure for you.
The other thing to remember though and my friend didn’t, was that because her dh her ds hadn’t made it to the outbound flight the inbound flight was automatically cancelled so when they all turned up to come home together only 2 of them had flights! You may already be aware of this!!

very unlikely to get it in less than a calendar week, particularly with the bank holiday - sorry - but you never know..........

Thanks so much for the replies! Yes, we have considered the return flights aspect, and have contacted Ryanair to tell them that we will be on the return flights. for once, I am gutted it's a bank holiday!
I guess we just have to wait and see... Thanks again

Are they there for 2 weeks?

We are in a very similar situation - our ten year olds passport expired a month ago and we are due to travel to France on Monday. We applied online on Monday just gone (19th) and had our appointment in Peterborough Tuesday morning. So far nothing - the online status says “checking application”. I’ve phoned numerous times and had conflicting views on time frames from “you should get it for the weekend” to “it will take 7 days”. My issue is that we have a bank holiday weekend coming up and I don’t know how that might affect turnaround and/or delivery. No one seems to be able to commit to anything which I guess I can understand but equally the inconsistency is driving me nuts!

wow, we appear to be in the exact same position, except you are a day ahead of us! Good luck with it all, crossing all my fingers for you! Do let me know when you get 'the message' - thanks SO much x

Ryanair don't sell return flights, they're all independently point to point so if you do make it out there, the original return is still valid.

When people talk about return flight cancellation they're generally talking about flag carriers where the cost of a return is about the same or even cheaper than a single but you must use the outward leg or risk cancellation of the return, as they see it as trying to game their illogical pricing system to save money or gain flexibility without paying for it.

I'd be very surprised if anyone has had a return flight cancelled on a standalone flight on a budget airline due to not using the outward leg because it's not how their systems work.
