Ferry to France … with a dog

Has anyone taken the ferry to France with their pooch? Last year we went via the tunnel which worked brilliantly. The pet centre was so efficient and easy. I’m considering a ferry but I hate the idea of muzzling my dog and/or leaving him alone in the car on his own for many hours. It’s much more direct though and would reduce the need to do a 6 hour drive. How bad is it (my dog gets separation anxiety and is never left more than 3 hours; is energetic and has never worn a muzzle).

You can book a pet cabin, although they sell out quickly. Otherwise they stay in kennels, which you can visit. Having said that, the kennels are not somewhere I would leave my dog.

We do the tunnel, purely for the dog.
