We want to go to Italy, but hopefully more than one destination. Two weeks September into October.

Not particularly keen on Rome, thinking more scenic, Lake Garda etc

Any tips, routes?

I know I can google, but my geography is worse than useless and lots of people have experience.

We went to Florence in July. It was amazing and the rail transport links were great. We worked out you could get pretty much anywhere. Next year we are going to explore Italy by rail! Sorrento is out of this world and you can travel by boat down the amalfi coast. I found Positano pretty but too busy.

We once did a trip where we flew into Naples, spent a few days on Capri, then back to Naples, train to Florence for a few days, then train to La Spezia for several days in the Cinque Terre, then flew home from Genoa.

Ischia is gorgeous. Cinque Terre villages. We went to Puglia in May and loved it - will go back next year. Weather should be good end of September. We stayed in Monopoli. I have Otranto and Gallipoli on the list for next year. Sicily - Taormina and Ortigia.

We stayed in Riva del Garda at the northern end of Lake Garda.

Beautiful area, easy reach of Venice, Verona, Milan
