AirBnB - Bed no breakfast?!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 18/08/2024 23:25

Not sure whether IABU but I'm miffed! Stayed in an AirBnB last week and there was only B, no B! First time I've stayed in an AirBnB where this has happened.

We arrived 5pm too (unavoidable delays) so we're too late to head out and forage for breakfast foods, but thankfully I had packed a box of cereal from our kitchen at home so at least kids were happy. We were left 1pt of milk in the fridge. We were staying a whole 6 nights.

Is this the norm? It's literally in the name; I book an AirBnB and expect BnB. Or did I misunderstand?!

I haven't written a review or feedback yet

I e stayed in a lot of airbandb's both in the uk and abroad and have never had breakfast prohibited- they're self catering 😂 unless you've booked a room in someone d home and they specifically say they provide breakfast.

BCBird · 19/08/2024 06:14

Never had nor would expect breakfast an Air Bnb

HelenWheels · 19/08/2024 06:27

i always check in advance and make sure there is breakfast

No, it's not the norm. Yes, you misunderstood.

Feels like a windup post, but I'll bite...

Did you not question, before leaving, why none of the reviews/conditions mentioned breakfast and why you weren't asked to fill out various allergy and preference forms?

NicoleSkidman · 19/08/2024 06:42

This is hilarious. The company is called Airbnb but you’re not actually booking B&Bs! Originally, it was about renting people’s private homes while they weren’t using them. It provided easy lnney for home owners and much cheaper accommodation for holiday makers. However, in recent years it has mostly been taking over but holiday homes and holiday letting agents.

I have stayed in about 20 airbnbs over the years and have never been provided with breakfast.

Out of interest, who did you think was going to prepare the breakfast since you’re staying in a private home? Did you think someone would come and let themselves in in the morning and start poaching eggs?

Northumberlandgirl · 19/08/2024 06:42

I rent out my annex through Airbnb. I provide a welcome pack, bread, butter, ham, cheese, fruit, juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and cereal. It wouldn't last a week but nice for those that have travelled a long way. I also provide home made jam, that is very popular.

Bjorkdidit · 19/08/2024 06:48

I've only used Airbnb once and that was years ago because I don't really like what they've become, never got into using them because they didn't use to show the precise location of the property and walking distance to amenities is a strong preference when we go away and I just prefer booking.com.

But the one time we did use them was to stay in a very nice converted hayloft on a camping and caravan site in the mountains north of Malaga and I'm fairly certain we did get breakfast. The site had a bar that also did tapas and breakfast for the guests.

But that site wasn't typical of the majority of properties on Airbnb so I'd not make assumptions about other places based on that experience.

Firsttimetrier · 19/08/2024 07:05

We host on Airbnb and let out our house when we’re away.

We do not provide breakfast. It’s an option you can do but it’s not expected to.
However, we do let guests use whatever is in our cupboards and we usually have cereal in there, but that’s not purposely done.

Firsttimetrier · 19/08/2024 07:07

Also, when would you expect people to cook the breakfast? If they are like us and renting out their home when away, are you expecting them to come back from their holiday each morning to cook!?

Teapleasemilknosugar · 19/08/2024 07:12

husbandcallsmepickle · 19/08/2024 04:05

Another example of someone not reading the small print which clearly states what is and isn't included.

Clearly a case of a typo in the large print name then 🤨

I don't. But in all the other many Air BnB places I have stayed (always annexes, like this one) there has always been left a loaf of bread, jam, cereal, milk, tea bags.

I don't think it'd an odd expectation really of an AirBnB.

Some do provide food, but if they do this is clearly stated in the description.

We leave basic like milk, juice, bread, oil, seasonings, cereal and fruit, we also pop a note asking guests to inform us if it needs to be soya milk etc.

FeralNun · 19/08/2024 07:25

Ah - so you were expecting a ‘welcome pack’ kind of thing, rather than an actual breakfast being made for you?

In which case I think that’s pretty standard for AirBnB, actually. I’d be surprised not to find as much as a teabag!

You can’t assume though - we always pack/buy some necessaries on the way.

If you’re going to be taking the name of the company so literally then I’m more surprised you aren’t upset that you’re accommodation isn’t floating around.
The one single rule of booking an AirBnb is to very carefully read the description of what is included and never make any assumptions. If it’s not on the listing, you aren’t getting it. But you know that now.

Danfromdownunder · 19/08/2024 07:31

This can’t be genuine 😆

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 07:32

Never had breakfast in an Airbnb. It’s just a play on words and the listing will say what’s included.

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 07:35

A pint of milk is handy and salt and pepper and oil. Though recently was asked what milk we wanted, said skimmed and turned up to semi skimmed so that was wasted.

Simonjt · 19/08/2024 07:39

Danfromdownunder · 19/08/2024 07:31

You’d be surprised.

We have an airbnb in our (open) basement, there’s a staircase from the airbnb to our kitchen so we just shut the door. We had one guest who turned up in the kitchen at about 7:30 to ask why the washing up hadn’t been done, kitchen not cleaned and her bed not made the following evening. I explained its self catering, so its cleaned after your stay, unless its more than a week as we then offer a clean, change of bedding towels etc.

I thought we’d solved it, on day three she wanted to know where the spare milk, cereal etc was as she had used it all, to be honest I was impressed she had eaten such a big box of cornflakes already as a lone guest.

In her review she then wrote that the host entered the airbnb in his underwear with his child, er no, you broke basically broke into our house 🤣

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 07:41

Surely you have a lock on your door @Simonjt ??

SunQueen24 · 19/08/2024 07:44

It’s self catering unless expressly stated otherwise.

I run an Airbnb and have never had anyone expect breakfast! Our listing is so extensive the only way you’d be mislead is if you didn’t read it!

Simonjt · 19/08/2024 07:45

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 07:41

We do, but my husband had just been down to show her how to use the sauna, so it hadn’t been locked as he had literally just come through the door himself.

CautiousLurker · 19/08/2024 07:45

This is a parody post, surely?

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 07:46

Phew. I couldn’t sleep knowing they could come up!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 19/08/2024 07:22

But not everyone does want this. I don't want the host's random food - we have multiple allergies in our family so it won't get eaten. I begrudge paying more for an AirBnB so the host can provide a loaf of artisan local bread or whatever for us to look at all week (or more likely, chuck in the bin to contain the gluten...) tbh. It's on you to read the description and/or check to see if that kind of stuff is provided.
