I know there are already threads regarding SIM cards in Egypt. Can I just check...

we buy a new SIM card at the airport in Egypt. Pop this is instead of your own SIM. (Finding somewhere safe for your normal SIM presumably - Knowing me I will probably lose mine!!!! 🙈).
Switch off Roaming?

I know that WhatsApp will work but my son is fretting about Snap Chat. Will that also work? (you would think hed just be excited about his holiday!!!!!)

Any other pointers on travelling to Egypt gratefully received. I've never been. We go to Hurgarda.

Yes, esims are great, then you won't risk losing your physical SIM.
You can Google comparisons to see which one would be the best for what you want data / data & calls etc.
I bought one with just data for my last trip - the only slight annoyance was once trying to book a table, we couldn't receive texts or calls, so couldn't do that. But otherwise got enough data to hotspot the DC & was reasonable cost
