Beach and mountains late Sep / Oct

I would love a holiday which has both hiking in the mountains and are also close to a beach. We are going at the end of Sep/ beginning of Oct for about 5-7 days and would ideally not have to rent a car to do it. Is there such a place where you can stay at a beach and hike from there? I was thinking Slovenia but we would still have to rent a car to get from the mountains to the beach. Within 4h from London and with good weather too..
Anyone got any ideas?!

White Mountains in Crete? I'm sure there's buses from the coast. I got to and from the Samaria Gorge by bus.
Sicily / Mount Etna? You could stay by the beach then join an organised tour to get to and hike up Mt Etna.
Or Tenerife, not much over 4hr flight and there's Mt Teide.

Thank you! Great suggestions, I’ll start doing some research 😊

Malaga area + a trip/hike to Caminito del Rey. Have a look online.

Northern Spain, Asturian coast and the Picos de Europa. Lovely!

Newcastle county down, northern ireland. Where the mourne mountains sweep down to the sea in Newcastle. Late sep not hot and not too cold so perfect for hiking. You can start hikes on foot from Newcastle donard park.

How about Corsica? Proper mountains and lovely beaches too.

Have a look into Madeira.

Oman

Good weather for the beach is usually too hot for hiking. Maybe not the type of beach you were thinking of but what about Annecy?

Blahahahah · 16/08/2024 12:32

Did you mean actual mountains or will hills do? The most obvious one to me is mount Teide in Tenerife that can be walked up from the beach and a massive temperature difference

Just check areas for opening times at end of September. For example where we live most cable cars up the mountains stop summer service mid September, or close the toll roads. As then it’s prepped for winter before snow starts.
Some will open weekends a few extra weeks. Same with lake beach’s, many close around 10th September. But you can still go in wild swimming just not from beach areas as they are shut

I think you need to hire a car really. Otherwise from most beach’s or lakes you would have 5-6 hr hikes to get up. But you might be able to use local taxis or buses to get higher to start also.

Have you looked at Turkey? The weather is cooler in October for hiking. There are lots lovely boutique hotels on the beach, with mountains and hiking trails outside the door. London to Bodrum = four hours.

Northern Cyprus is beautiful in October too, with lots of fantastic signposted trails through the forests and mountains. London to Limassol = four and half hours

Travelandfood · 16/08/2024 19:13

Thank you! Lots of great places! I LOVE the look of Corsica, I can’t believe I’ve never considered it before.

Madeira. Extensive bus network and lots of hiking minibus tours.

Umm the summit of Mount Teide is at over 12,000 feet. Hardly a stroll up from the beach 😂😂😂

No but apparently crazy people run up it...others walk

Vanillalime · 18/08/2024 07:44

Cinque Terre in Italy. You can hike between the villages along coastal paths. The entire area is well served by train so you can hop from town to town.

rogdmum · 18/08/2024 08:06

Port de Soller. Loads of walks in the Tramuntanas either direct from the town or Port and buses to Valldemossa, Cuber etc. Finca Son Mico will be open then- amazing lemon meringue pie up in the hills (you can either do a loop from Port to finca to town to port or on the way to/from Deia).

Another vote for Corsica. And we stayed in a place where the owners would happily ferry you about to wherever you wanted to go, not just by car but also boat to remote beaches. Was fabulous

Albania has some beautiful beaches and mountains and weather is 20-25 ish in September

Fabulous food, very friendly people and not expensive
