I'll only really have a week due to Work and I was wondering about Dubai

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or can suggest anywhere that might be better thanks in anticipation

Dubai is nice but I do find the people/tourists aren't that friendly in terms of sitting in a bar or restaurant solo it's quite coupley.
Where as Thailand is lovely but time difference might make it harder if only a week where as dubai is two hours so it doesn't effect you as much.
Cape Verde is lovely too, not sure about Christmas though.
Maybe Spain too there's a great atmosphere there but it's not hot hot weather

Dubai has beautiful weather at Xmas. 25 degrees, very safe for a lone female to be out. All the hotels have lavish xmas parties if you want to book a ticket.

Cape Town! I did this pre-covid when my kids went to their dad's for the first time.
Beach, Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, Penguins & Wineries & no time difference.
(Check safety post covid, coz I know a colleague was due to go just after Borders opened and cancelled coz of crime rates)

How about a cruise? Lots to join in with if you want to.

Hi
I travel alone all the time & have travelled widely. Personally I don't like Dubai . If you are hitting the Middle East, I much prefer Abu Dhabi . As well as just chilling by the pool or sunbathing , you can hit the Louvre and sit Blue Mosque .... I found the people much friendlier ....

Nugg · 13/08/2024 22:46

Oh thank you so much everyone. I actually have friends in Abu Dhabi so that could be an option.

The truth is I lost my mum earlier this year. None of my adult children want to get together at Christmas which would've been my first option so I figure I just wanna go somewhere and pretend it's not happening....!

I will look into whether I can get more time off work because that's a possibility.

I do have a connection in Thailand as well, and it's definitely on my list of places to go a friend runs a retreat there so all I would need is a flight and some spending money

There are actually more options than I thought thank you for opening my eyes a little and for all your suggestions so far!

Sadly this would be a definite no for me. I have some neighbours that are South African and they've moved to England because of the crime rates. He came 1st to try and find a job and a home for them here and she lasted two weeks because it felt too dangerous to be there alone. Some of the stories they told us were horrific so it's not gonna ever be on my list no matter what anyone else tells me unfortunately because it looks beautiful!

I lived out in the Middle East and I wouldn't do Dubai on my own no. If you have friends in Abu Dhabi and want to go there fine, or Oman.

I'd probably go to one of the nice hotels in The Canaries, Bermuda and Caribbean also lovely that time of year. I found Barbados and St Lucia very safe. I only had a week too and it's perfectly doable. Life slows down in the Caribbean a week there feels like two Grin

Speccytwit · 14/08/2024 13:38

If I were you and had a friend in Thailand then I'd go there. The weather will be great - you can completely forget about Christmas.

My favourite winter places are the Canaries, but can be very expensive at Christmas and there will be Christmassy things going on, which might make you feel a bit homesick (even though you say none of your DC want to do anything).

Crikeyalmighty · 14/08/2024 13:42

If you can afford it I would do somewhere in Caribbean

MidnightPatrol · 14/08/2024 14:00

Thailand is a good shout.

I’ve travelled there alone and always felt safe.
