Potential broken arm day before we fly to Spain

My 9 year old son just came back from sports camp with what looked like a broken wrist. It's swollen and he can't move it, he's in alot of pain. He got hit really hard by a football. My partner has taken him to A&E but we are due to fly to Spain tomorrow for a week long villa holiday with 5 other families.

We are going to ask about a split cast if it's broken, has anyone managed to fly 24 hours after getting a cast?? He obviously won't be able to swim if he has a cast and that's what the kids do most of the day 😭

So worried for him and devastated about the holiday, don't know what to do

My ds did and had one of those limbo blue cover things for it he was fine!

Drachuughtty · 08/08/2024 14:28

Oh dear :-( Had to cancel our holiday last year with a last minute illness so I feel your pain. I guess take the doctor's advice is all you can do.

DancingNotDrowning · 08/08/2024 14:30

Yes twice had broken arms on holiday.

order a blue plastic sleeve off Amazon today and he’ll be able to go in pool.

one DC used it, one didn’t preferring just to get his cast wet. It was absolutely disgusting but we took him to get it changed when we got back from holiday

ZenNudist · 08/08/2024 14:31

I'd be less worried about if he can swim and more worried that you might not be going. Step 1 get a diagnosis and ask medics if he's allowed to go. Step2 ring your insurers and make sure they know your medical circumstances have changed.

I wouldn't get a cast cover for swimming. If it leads you're stuffed and will have to go to a Spanish hospital to get it recast.

Ds1 broke his wrist before our may holiday but it healed quickly so it didn't ruin the holiday. Ds2 broke his arm last week less than a week before we fly on holiday. We will keep him out of the pool and beach.

thebigchorus · 08/08/2024 14:34

If he can't swim consider if it's going to ruin the holiday for everyone? He'll be hot and bothered and watching his friends have fun.

It's rubbish timing but these things happen - I speak from experience!

HipHipWhoRay · 08/08/2024 14:40

Been there, but 48 hrs before. Obviously ensure needs a split cast to fly, but I think official recommendation from airline is 48 hrs due to increased swelling in first day or so. But talk to ortho team so they leave enough space. Also used one of those Bloccs cast covers and was great, albeit a bit tricky to master. DC was in and out of pool with no issues. Obviously there was a risk we’d end up having to get it re cast whilst away if it got wet, but was fine. We bought two in case first split, but was fine

So, rather than insist he wear the sleeve or he didn’t swim, you just let the NHS waste further resources?

sonjadog · 08/08/2024 14:47

I broke my wrist last year and I think flying was out for 48 hours or so because of swelling…

Opihr · 08/08/2024 15:14

Not sure about flying so soon after the break, but the waterproof cast covers are BRILLIANT!

Definitely worth trying to get hold of one if you get permission to fly.

Tikk · 08/08/2024 15:22

Hopefully it's not broken but if it is you'll need to let your insurance know.

Get fit to fly letter from Doctor
Might be a charge for it.

Wrennyjenwren · 08/08/2024 15:49

My DD had a cast on going to Greece and nobody batted an eyelid. It was a soft cast, mind, but it didn't look much different from a proper cast. We didn't need a fit to fly note or anything. Airline didn't even ask when it happened. Thankfully she could take it off a couple of days into the holiday.

Thanks, would the hospital be able to provide this? Dr's will be closed by the time he's been seen I reckon

If they split the cast he can fly (watched my husband have 7 surgeries on a bad break and spend umpteen years in and out of a cast).

Try and get one of these before you go:

I went swimming with that on when I broke my hand and we went to Egypt.

Thanks!

That's unbelievably irresponsible. The reason you aren't meant to get it wet is because firstly, a wet cast can cause a severe skin infection underneath and also it impacts the stability of the cast, meaning the break might not heal properly. Take today's prize for poor parenting.

What about how much pain the poor kid is in!
I'd follow advice of ZenNudist.

My sister broke her collar bone on holiday and the remainder was miserable for all of us.

justasoul · 08/08/2024 16:23

When DD broke her wrist, they immobilised on the day we went to A&E and had to go to the fracture clinic a few days later once the swelling had gone down a bit to put the proper cast. Not sure if it's the same for every hospital, mind.

SouthgatesWaistcoat · 08/08/2024 16:23

If it is broken your DH can ask the Drs advice about flying. When DP had a break he was told he couldn't fly for 48 hours after.

SouthgatesWaistcoat · 08/08/2024 16:24

Oops posted too soon.... we cancelled the holiday as he was in quite a lot of pain and wouldn't be able to do most of the activities we'd planned (active ones!)

I know, I'm really worried he's just going to be miserable and in pain 😢 He was more upset about the thought of missing the holiday than the potential break tho. Will see what the Dr's say and take it from there
