Potential broken arm day before we fly to Spain

My 9 year old son just came back from sports camp with what looked like a broken wrist. It's swollen and he can't move it, he's in alot of pain. He got hit really hard by a football. My partner has taken him to A&E but we are due to fly to Spain tomorrow for a week long villa holiday with 5 other families.

We are going to ask about a split cast if it's broken, has anyone managed to fly 24 hours after getting a cast?? He obviously won't be able to swim if he has a cast and that's what the kids do most of the day 😭

So worried for him and devastated about the holiday, don't know what to do

Oops posted too soon.... we cancelled the holiday as he was in quite a lot of pain and wouldn't be able to do most of the activities we'd planned (active ones!)

Yeah we had plans to go to a water park and he's usually in the pool literally all day. Devastated for him. And the rest of us potentially!

DS wasn’t allowed to fly when he broke his arm at a similar age-it happened the day before we were flying out on holiday :(

Fingers crossed for a sprain and a splint OP 🤞🏻

Ah man, what crap timing! Hope the poor chap isn't in too much pain Sad

He's got a fracture in both arm bones near his wrist 😭 Waitng on specialist bone dr to confirm what kind of cast he needs and if travel is possible

My DS broke his wrist day before we were due to go on holiday. Xray at A&E confirmed break and they strapped it up with a bandage and one of those Velcro casts but we had to go back a couple of days later to the fracture clinic for a proper cast as they couldn’t fit him in before.

It was a complete nightmare as we couldn’t go away before he was seen by the fracture clinic.

The worst part was it was just before Christmas. We were planning on being away for Christmas so had no tree, no decorations, no massive food shop, no turkey! Such a stress!

Oh no! Both arms?! Poor thing must be in agony.
So sorry for you!

I think she meant both the Ulna and the Radius rather than both arms, but I had to read it twice ......... That would be awful ! (even more awful)
Hope it all works out for you OP. Keeping fingers crossed.

Limbo bags work really well for keeping casts dry. You may be able to get one sent to your holiday destination.

inquisitiveinga · 08/08/2024 17:15

Sounds like you've dodged a bullet by not having to go aboard with 5 other families! 😜

I'm kidding of course. Like others have said, hopefully you can grab a fit to fly note and you can also get waterproof cast covers depending on the cast so that could mean he could join in a bit? I've got my fingers crossed for you.

afrikat · 08/08/2024 17:21

Sorry I did mean the ulna and radius in one arm. They are doing a half cast and a letter to say he can fly, so still plan on going tomorrow, he's insisting he wants to go. Will order a rubber waterproof sleeve in the hope he can at least get in the pool. My poor boy, he's in so much pain 😢

Haha, I know it's some people's idea of hell but we've booked a big mansion with a private chef and it's a brilliant holiday, did it last year.

Make sure you get decent pain relief. Paracetamol may not do him enough but if giving him paracetamol weigh him so you get an accurate dose for his weight as ,9 year olds are different sizes.

Poppinjay · 08/08/2024 17:41

There's knack to putting the cast cover on. Fold the top over so the grippy part is not in contact with the limb or the plaster until it's slid all the way up. It can also help if two people hold the top open so it doesn't touch anything until it's past the injury. It gets easier as the pain subsides.

I hope it works for him and he can make the most of the pool.

samarrange · 08/08/2024 17:42

Your travel insurance's health coverage may not work, since it starts when you get on the plane and the arm is already broken. Make sure you have your GHIC (you do have one per family member, I hope!), and that you know where the nearest public (NHS equivalent) health centre to your hotel is. If you can give the name of the town where you're staying I will look that up for you. 🙏

SouthgatesWaistcoat · 08/08/2024 17:51

Do think carefully about whether it's a good idea for him to travel and do the holiday or not. I'm in Spain at the moment and it's absolutely boiling hot - weather forecast says 36 degrees but it feels much hotter - it's super humid.

I wouldn't want to be all hot and bothered in pain and with a cast on - and unable to jump in the pool or a cold shower (without faff).

Thanks, going to alternate with ibuprofen

They are coming back from hospital now so will have a good chat about it

oh that bad luck, your poor DC! Hope he can enjoy the holiday, even with his arm.
The local supermarket pharmacy (Tesco here) sells the ‘Limbo’ type waterproof covers, so you might be able to get one locally today.

It was absolutely disgusting but we took him to get it changed when we got back from holiday

So, rather than insist he wear the sleeve or he didn’t swim, you just let the NHS waste further resources?

God there’s always one Hmm

we didn’t use NHS resources. HTH
