Solo trip

Thinking of using ‘What if the boiler blows up?’ savings to go long haul to meet a friend. Everyone is saying “Do it, do it!”. I do know how lucky I am to even be able to consider it and it could be the adventure that has always been waiting for me.

However, I have never travelled long haul, or alone and am super anxious (flight connections, language/communication difficulties, heat, getting more than the usual attention from mosquitoes, etc).
Husb and I have spent several evenings almost booking a flight, before I go “Let me just check…” and rush off to the lav.
Keen to know how others have fared and sorry for being such an arse.

When I was young I travelled to South America alone and it was fine. Of course, these things are much easier when you are young. However, looking at the list of things you are concerned about, I think the way to think about these is that you CAN cope with all of them.
Flight delays - you wait and/ or liaise with the airline. Get a hotel if you need to wait overnight.
Language - Google translate, drawings, body language etc.
Heat - ok, it’s uncomfortable, but you will find ways.
Bugs - get good bug spray.
Other things that are not on your list may also happen, but you WILL cope, because we always do. Of course it is harder in another country, but you will have your friend, a phone, and the internet.
Do it - you will be glad you did 🙂.

It's not solo travel, you're meeting a friend. Which means you'll have company and safety.

The flights, you'll over-prepare because you're stressed Grin

Language, it has never been easier. I travelled in countries where I spoke about 10 words and used sign language and goodwill! You can have Google Translate!

Bugs, I can't help you, I am a magnet.

Where is it too.....

I'd be doing it -you'll be so glad you do - my daughter just back a life-changing - year at uni in Malaysia with 2 months solo traveling before - she booked the first two weeks on an organised tour then set out alone - Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Taiwan, Borneo, even a weekend in Australia - so safe and easy to travel
