2 adults, 2 kids, 9 &12. Thinking for next year. Very long flight. Was thinking of breaking it up with a couple of nights somewhere en route. Has anyone done this? Have been to alot of Europe so somewhere a little further would be great...

Honestly, I'd just fly straight there. I've broken up trips to Australia with stopovers in Japan, and have specifically travelled to Japan and didn't think the flights were bad. The bit that is time consuming is the waiting around in the airport, so I wouldn't want to add to that.

Yes we have done long haul before to Africa but I mean that we would like to break it up with 2 or 3 nights somewhere en route...

I think there are certain airlines that do promotions if you're doing a few nights of a layover. I feel like I remember seeing Turkish airlines do this and you maybe even get the hotel free? It was a while ago but if you don't have somewhere particular in mind, googling those kind of layovers might give you inspiration and save some money. For what its worth we loved Istanbul!
I know Dubai is popular for short layovers, as is Singapore.
If you want to try and split the journey as much as possible then India is obviously pretty much in the middle.
Too many factors in it really to give more suggestions - what's the priority for the stopover, sightseeing, ease of travel to/from airport, splitting the journey evenly?

Thank you for all the suggestions..the motivation is to give the children an experience of another country and also breaking up the very long travel time. Youngest has (mild) additional needs so would need the trip broken up on the way out at least!

Tons of kid friendly stuff in Singapore - the zoo, bird park, night safari etc. Universal Studios, Skyline Luge, indoor karting and iFly all on Sentosa Island. Not to mention all the cool stuff at Jewel inside Changi Airport.
