Thinking about going to Croatia next summer - is it very hot? And any recs for which part to visit? I like activity and beach - can’t lie around all day. And I like good food, too! Thanks

We were there in June, was around 33 degrees. I wouldn't have gone later in the year tbh. We did Split, Dubrovnik and Brac. Split is beautiful to see for a couple of days, Dubrovnik I didn't rate at all and the island of Brac was by far the nicest. We loved it there.
Split and Dubrovnik both very busy. Locals told me in August it is heaving. Depends what you like
It's a beautiful country and you can get quiet/busy/chilled/full on whatever you're looking for.

Girlintheframe · 05/08/2024 07:06

Should have said Brac has lots to do if you're active. Lots of water sports, hire scooters, jeeps etc. we did a couple of hikes too. The other islands are meant to be nice too but I don't know much about them.

Split and Dubrovnik are both cruise ports so get very busy in high season. I prefer Pula and Rovinj.

Following with interest - we are considering Croatia for next summer.

We went to Dubrovnik in September a couple of years ago and it wasnt too busy. You can do a nice mix of beach and activities there.

We went to Dubrovnik last summer, stayed in the most amazing seafront hotel, 5 minute walk down into the town. It was beautiful, the sea was so clear, stunning.

We are going back to Croatia in 2 weeks, to stay on Brac island, can't wait.

Following with interest. I've been looking at Pula and Rovinj. Can I ask how is driving in Croatia? I've driven in Spain but only in rural tourist areas.... If I flew in to Split is it a reasonable drive to Rovinj?

Regularchoice · 05/08/2024 09:17

Was also thinking of maybe flying/ train out to Italy for a few days, but not sure if this is a crazy idea...

I am not sure about the visa situation now for crossing countries, but you would be way better off getting a flight to Trieste or Venice, or even Ljubljana, they are a much closer drive than Split for Rovinj!

From Split, the motorway is pretty straightforward but getting across the Pula pennisular is quite a winding road and it felt a bit endless when we did it. Although we have always been in off-season, so summer may be more problematic.

Regularchoice · 05/08/2024 09:35

@Trickedbyadoughnut Thanks for that.
So if we're planning to see a bit of Italy possibly better to fly in and out of maybe Venice, spend a few days either end of the holiday exploring, with the middle part in Croatia? I was trying to keep it as simple as possible, presuming rental car will need to be returned to whichever airport we collect from.

Istria, Rovinj, beautiful and not too packed.

Thelondonone · 05/08/2024 09:38

I’ve done korcula and Dubrovnik, both beautiful. Dubrovnik wills be very hot in august, it’s very expensive. We moved onto Montenegro which is beautiful.

We got married in Dubrovnik, so know it well although my info is out of date. It's a beautiful part of the world but very very busy - but I think they're trying to reduce the number of cruise ships.

We spent a week in Rovinj and a week in Opatija a few years ago and that was a gorgeous holiday. We did day trips to Venice, Lake Bled, Plitvice (sp) lakes, some caves in Slovenia as well as some very nice days just wandering around the area. Opatija is on a beautiful coastal walk called the Lungomare (again, sp).

Montenegro is also beautiful, you fly into Dubrovnik so you could do a few days in Dubrovnik and then drive/taxi to Montenegro.

We rode our tandem down the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia in July 2015. It hit over 40°C... We were OK when we were actually moving as we had the breeze but it was uncomfortable when we stopped! We were on a supported tour so had our luggage transported from hotel to hotel, but ended up treating the tour rep who was driving the van with the luggage for heat exhaustion and dehydration!

We went to Dubrovnik in April, it was beautiful, I loved it, but it was eye wateringly expensive with the cost of a lager anything from £8-£12
We stayed in the Rixos and thought it was excellent

Lotscanchange · 05/08/2024 11:32

Thank you all - sounds fab but v hot!

We went to the island of Cres in 2019. No resorts and just a couple of hotels. Lots of campsites and self catering. Hardly any Brits, lots of Croatians, Italians and Austrian/Germans.
Beautiful island.

Is that Porec ? If not, it looks very similar !

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/08/2024 22:29

Yes that is, indeed, Poreč. We loved the Istrian Penisula.
