Stockholm and islands

Hello, I am thinking of going to Stockholm with my DS17 in a few weeks as it looks like there is lots to do and explore and the weather hopefully won't be boiling hot! I would like to come back feeling rested. So I was also thinking of day trips to the islands or are there any islands (eg 3 hours by ferry) with a beach, no car where we could also stay for a few nights? Many thanks x

Nåttarö has the best beaches, you would need to get a train to Nynäshamn and get the ferry from there, its about an hour from Stockholm on the train. Lots of places to stay, the school holidays end on the 19th August, so it would be quieter from then onwards.

At the moment Stockholm is mid twenties and humid, like a lot of our islanss Nåtarrö is cooler, cloudier and windier so you may find it hard to find a beach suitable for sunbathing as the weather is more changeable on the islands.

Thank you Simonjt - apologies for not replying sooner. We have decided on the following: Fly to Stockholm on Wednesday or Thursday and stay 7 or 8 nights. Day 1 - book a guided bike tour (2 hours) to get our bearings. Walk around/explore :) Day 2 - Go to the Nobel Prize Museum, walk around Gamla Stan. Maybe go on a Canal boat tour. Day 3 - Kungliga Djurden - Vasa Museum and Viking Museum. In Stockholm we would also like to go to the ABBA museum, maybe Drittingham Palace, Paradox museum, Swedish Parliament. There certainly looks plenty to see and do in Stockholm! I would also like a few relaxing/not city days. Nattaro looks idyllic for a few days although my slight hesitation is the minimum you can book the cabins for is 3 nights, they look a bit basic (ie no TV/wi-fi) and sad as this to say I'm not sure if there's enough to do or go to on the island. Yes, yes, I know that is the whole point of going! Is it possible/worth going on a day trip to Nattaro (train/ferry)? Or should we stay in Stockholm for 7/8 nights and go on day trips to another islands (eg Vaxholm). Actually, if we go to Nattaro the following week it is possible to book for 1 or 2 nights. It does look lovely. Seeing the city sights in Stockholm seems straightforward/clear, getting the balance for coming home feeling relaxed and the more chilled/islands part less clear. Any help and advice gratefully received.

There's mPox in Sweden - I'd recommend putting the holiday on hold.

Thank you for the information - I wasn't aware of that.

Yeah Stockholm and that area of Sweden is very easy to get around, it might be a bit far to go for a day if you don’t want 2-3 days. We’ve been to Vaxholm today, its a really nice place to visit and you can easily see a lot in one day and be back in Stockholm for bedtime, I’d get a ferry there and back rather than a tourist boat, its cheaper that way and a more regular service.

I think you could fit more into your days, but you can always change things around when you get there. If you buy a city pass it includes entry to most places and includes hop on hop off bus travel, you can get passed based on time, I don’t think it includes the abba museum, but I think everything else is included, it does include the hop on hop off boats as well.

We stayed on Vaxholm and then got the ferry to Grinda, which is lovely. Instead of beaches it has beautiful rocks. You could get there quite easily from Stockholm Stromkajen.

Thank you very much - that's very helpful and much appreciated. I have now booked flights, travel insurance and a guided bike tour for Friday morning. I am struggling to find accommodation (Air BnB) mainly due to procrastination!!! Ideally I would like a 2 bed apartment or a one bed with a sofa bed is fine too. I have been looking at Gama Stan, Ostermalm, Kungsholmen, Katarina-Sofia, Djurdgardsbrunn areas. Nothing available. Is there anywhere a little further out which is nice/recomended and has easy access into Stockholm on the metro or bus?

Ours is fully booked :)

Anywhere nearish a metro is fine, Enskede-arsta-vantor and south Stockholm is nice, quiet and very safe.

What are your dates and total ideal budget?
