Where in the Alps would you go for this kind of summer holiday?

… proper snow-capped mountain scenery
… some smaller peaks that can be summited through hiking (not climbing / snow stuff) via cable car etc
… pretty town that can be used as a base and has restaurants and shops etc, but not thronging with tourists
… stuff to do that’s not hiking

Thinking maybe the Tyrol or Zermatt area??

Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria.

The snow-capped mountains are in the view on the horizon - although you can go to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier about 30 mins drive away, and ride up on cable cars there to actually play in the snow. Otherwise Saalbach-Hinterglemm has:

  • Hiking - more than you can manage in a week, ranging from easy walks to serious hikes;
  • Europe's biggest "Go Ape"-style climbing park and zip-wires;
  • An outdoor pool complex;
  • Paragliding;
  • Mountain biking and gentle cycling - e-bikes are hugely popular for getting around and sightseeing in the area;
  • Mountain restaurants;
  • Trim-tracks and treasure trails for kids and loads of playgrounds;
  • Free use of the cable cars and local buses with the free Joker Card from registered accommodation (Hotels, B&Bs and apartments);
  • 20 minutes from Zell am See - for the beautiful lake and scenery, lake swimming, sailing, veteran steam train; summer toboggan run (on rails). [Zell is also a great location, but can get very crowded with tourists in summer]

90 minutes easy transfer from Salzburg Airport by train, bus or car. Summer flights to Salzburg are available from many regional airports in the UK.

Chamonix!

Chamonix and surrounding areas, my family are from the area and have spent many a beautiful summer holiday there!

The Tirol would definitely work for this. Try Neustift im Stubaital. Quiet but lots in easy bus/cable car reach.

Saas Fee, Engelberg.

Round the Zugspitze would work - have a look at Garmisch in Germany or Ehrwald in Austria.

Thanks all! I’ve been to Chamonix (years ago) and enjoyed it but we’ve been to France before and the DC are keen to visit a new country, hence looking at Switzerland or Austria as a possibility.

Does anyone have accommodation recommendations for the areas mentioned? Ideally we’ll self cater as it’s easier with DC1 food allergies. A villa / AirBnB with a view and a pool would be my dream…
