I haven't flown for 40 years. How strict are they with the deal where a small rucksack has to fit under the seat at the front? Can you also take a handbag? Thank you.

Depends on what type of ticket you have.

Are you travelling with seat selection and priority boarding or not? If not then you can only bring a small backpack, no handbag. 40cmx20x25 for storage under your seat. They occasionally ask you to put the small bag in the sizer and it's a risk because they charge if it doesn't fit. But you could chance it I suppose.

If you DO have seat selection and priority boarding then the underseat bag is the same size, but you can also bring a case that fits in the overheads.

One trick people use if they only have the underseat bag, is to buy something like a bottle of water in the duty free, get a bag and use it to put stuff in if your underseat bag is bursting. You can bring both the underseat and duty free purchases onboard, but the DF must be in a bag.

Happy travels!

Try putting your handbag in your under-seat bag. Thats what I do - but I generally pay for checked luggage.

Very strict. Depending on the destination they will make you prove it'll fit in one of the measuring bins. (or they'll eyeball it and make you prove it)

And only one bag. Your handbag would have to fit into your underseat bag (only for boarding though)

I use Ryan air all the time and they've never once asked me to put it in the measuring bin. I also always use a handbag too. But I generally am flying from the same 3 airports so maybe it differs.

Just flown with them. We got bags that measured exactly. Most others had rucksacks much bigger than ours. But I paid for extra legroom and our bags ended up in lockers 3 behind us

Just read the instructions on the website ( I think nowadays they send them to you as well shortly before the flight?), follow them to the letter and you won't have any problems.

Use them all the time too and have never been asked ! I also have a pretty big bag as the under seat bag . As in all my clothes for a week .

We sat at the gate watching numerous people be made to shove their bag into the measuring bin. Those that couldn't had to stand to one side and buy a cabin bag allowance before they let them on the plane.

Best option is to get a soft sided bag or rucksack, at least if it doesn't quite fit you can take a couple of tops out and put them on before shoving the bag in.
