Where to go mid-late September?

We’ve been going round in circles for weeks trying to decide on where to go for approx 1 week in mid-late September.

Can anyone recommend somewhere:

  • that will be nice enough weather but not too hot (thinking low-mid 20s)
  • Relatively easy to get to from Manchester / Liverpool / Leeds airports
  • preferably coastal
  • small town / large village
  • preferably self-catering accomodation but would consider hotel too

Budget flexible.

One of the Greek islands
Rhodes or Crete

ringmybe11 · 01/08/2024 19:41

Last couple of years we've had some lovely holidays in Mallorca

waltonway · 01/08/2024 19:44

Thanks for the suggestions!

We haven’t been on a beach holiday in several years (pre Covid) and I don’t handle the heat as well as I used to.

Have you got any sense of how warm it would generally be on Crete / Rhodes / Mallorca at that time?

I’ve looked up the past data but it’s hard to know how hot it would really feel, if that makes any sense

I went to Rhodes on 28th Sept a few years ago & it was lovely, low 20’s with a light breeze. I’m going a bit earlier this year so expecting it to be a bit warmer.

Majorca will be mid to late 20s ( 24-28)

Rawrrawr1 · 01/08/2024 20:08

We went to the Costa del sol mid Sept last year..Cala de Mijas, temp was mid 20's, we had a few pool days and there is loads to do nearby.
We stayed self catering at los amigos beach club, it was nice

madameparis · 01/08/2024 20:23

Florida. September is my favourite time there - warm but not humid like it is mid summer.

Lincslady53 · 01/08/2024 21:08

France is nice. We went touring round tge Loire, finishing at the Ile de Re. We had rain on one day, but lovely and warm the rest. Only disadvantage, car hire is very expensive compared to Spain. We are going to Ireland this autumn, and car hire is a third of the cost in France.

Alghero.

East Algarve. Average 25. 2.5 hr flight and cheap.

BringMeTea · 02/08/2024 09:28

Mallorca or Menorca.

Lovetotravel123 · 02/08/2024 09:50

Another vote for the Algarve.

Belfastchild74 · 02/08/2024 09:58

Lake garda. We've been a few times in Sept and early to mid October, weather is still warm enough for pool days and plenty to do in the villages around the lake

showeringthisaft · 02/08/2024 10:19

Tavira in Portugal, lovely place and easy commute from Faro airport.

Chania in Crete is also lovely.

Merro · 02/08/2024 13:24

I went to Mallorca last year mid September. It was much hotter than I expected, around 30C. The sea was warm and it cooled off in the evening.
Looking to go again in later September this time.
We always go from Leeds, there is a good choice of flight times (I won't travel at stupid o'clock just to save a few pounds).
I've been to the Ionian islands in September before and had rain so I would head a bit further south.

budgiegirl · 02/08/2024 13:30

Menorca/Majorca/Ibiza - lovely time of year to go - it can be fairly hot (although not always!), but not as aggressive heat as the height of the summer, and there's often a gentle breeze by the coast . Quieter then too, mainly couples and young families. Ideal for beaches, pools, bit of sightseeing/pottering round towns/sitting at a cafe bar

greengreyblue · 02/08/2024 13:31

Cornwall? Quieter and should still be low 20s.

TheDogsMother · 02/08/2024 13:47

We traveled at that time last year and year before. We toured the west coast of France for one trip and the western side of Provence the other. Mostly lovely weather but not too boiling.

We don't have children, and pre-covid did several holidays in Sep/Oct. Less crowds and still warm enough to swim. Some places were a little cooler at night, so a cardigan is handy. I can't recall the exact dates/temp though.

Majorca. We stayed in the city and 1 highlight was a day trip on a small gauge train to Soller. I actually wished we'd stayed in Soller, because there was a beach and marina, lovely restaurants, a market the day we went and just more of a holiday vibe than the city.

Malaga. We've stayed in the 'city' many times but never the coastal resorts. the city has lots to see and do, a beach, boardwalk and a mix of locals and tourists.

Rethymon in Crete. We flew in/out from Heraklion airport, but Rethymon is almost in the centre of the island, so can also be reach from Chania airport. I've heard good things about Chania too, but never visited. Nice harbour and walkabout town. Plenty of restaurants. We caught a bus to Heraklion to see the museum and Knossos- if you are into history.

Sicily- but might still be hot. We were there 2 weeks. Flew into Palermo, few days there. Modella beach was a local bus trip away for the day, otherwise along the coast is Cefalu which has good reviews. We also went to Agrigento, Catania and Syracuse. Taormina also has good reviews, but we didn't get there due to a rumbling Etna!

JC03745 · 02/08/2024 16:43

Thought of another- Northern Spain like Bilbao. If you are foodies, I've heard great things and it might be a bit cooler than the south. I haven't been though due to our planned trip being cancelled pre-covid. Its on the list though.

minipie · 02/08/2024 20:11

Croatia. Perfect time for any of the Croatian islands - sea will still be warm but the air temps will have cooled down a lot.

MissAmbrosia · 03/08/2024 10:30

Sicily. French or Italian Riviera. Puglia.

snoopyfanaccountant · 03/08/2024 15:35

Dubrovnik

TheFairyCaravan · 03/08/2024 15:38

Menorca is lovely at that time of year.

We’re going to Kos on 14/9, we’re expecting it to be hot. We’ve been before in September and it was very hot, much hotter than Mallorca or Menorca.
