Ugh.
I am currently on our first overseas family holiday in years
Cost a lot of money.
Me, partner, and 3 dc from late teen to young adult
The journey here was horrific...issue with the plane. Ended up travelling for 16 hours after a very early start
Hotel seemed lovely, but since 6am this morning, there are heavy Roadworks literally outside our bedroom windows :(
I'm gutted.
Absolutely gutted.
Already claimed via the app re: compensation for late flight, but...what can I do about this? If anything?
The hotel manager just shrugged.
Partner seemed to accept that.
Dc don't seem to be enjoying it. Don't like the food. It's very hot (32 today)
(We had to move the date due to a family emergency, so we weren't planning to be here in this heat)
I feel very tired and fed up.
I'm running on very little sleep and just want to go home:(
Oldest dc in particular, is really getting on my nerves. I know he misses his gf but it's not like he won't see her soon.
We are in a beautiful part of the world, and I'm just feeling really disappointed and sad :(
So...please tell me your tips for getting through less than ideal trips!
I feel like telling them all to leave me alone atm :(

Is today your first day?

Do. They are not toddlers, they can take care of themselves. Go do what you want - book a tour or a massage, read a book, take a water aerobics class if that's your thing - until everybody has had time to relax from trip and they manage not to get on your nerves.

Travelling is - can be - so stressful and exhausting. Plus you feel responsible for everyone having a good time.

What time of day is it there right now?
Can you get DH and DCs to go out and leave you alone for a couple of hours so you get a bit of space to reset yourself and maybe have a short nap?
Don't make everything your fault OP: it isn't, it's just life, messy, unpredictable and imperfect. But a bit of space for just you might really help you to relax.
Out of interest- where are you?

Once you had a decent nights sleep tonight tomorrow will be much better. In the meantime take yourself off away from them, grab a drink, book, spa treatment, what ever you fancy!

Thank you.
We have moved rooms now (better view, tbh)
We've all had a chat and cleared the air (I think)
We've made some plans for the next couple of days, but they are plans that can be altered if necessary at short notice.
Hopefully, a good night's sleep will help!
I appreciate the replies xx

Oooh Italy amazing. My partner and I have a teen each. They like to have stuff planned but what they like more than anything is great food, and you are in the right place for that. We try and alternate to do a day of sightseeing/activity with a late long lazy lunch then a pool/beach day.

Hopefully today is a better day.

user8800 · 31/07/2024 13:34

Been good so far, thank you
I'm so glad we moved rooms though...the Roadworks are back :(
It's very very hot
I wouldn't come at this time again but, as I say, it was unavoidable this time
I think I'm off for a swim!

In Italy there is grappa...

Oh crikey I love Italy (and will be there in just over a week, hurrah!).

My tips are to do any sightseeing first thing in the morning, then snooze, swim in the afternoon, and then get ready for an evening mooch. What was it that made you choose your area? Focus on the whys you're there. And eat all the gelato!!

Whereabouts are you (we're going to be mainly in Umbria, with a bit of travel before and after)?

36 here today. oof.
Swim was good. We went on a boat trip, which was pleasant
I may have 🍷 later 🥂
