We've got a 2-day break in Singapore, coming home from a Vietnam/Cambodia tour. This will be mid-October.
Arriving & leaving late p.m. So 1 full day & 2 bits.
What do people recommend, please ?

We were there for about 3 days and went on the "big wheel" (I'm sure it has a proper name, I just can't think of it at the moment!) and the cloud forest.

We also got a cable car over to sentosa, which has a little beach and other bits.

We were staying in a predominantly Chinese part (as opposed to the business district) so we wandered round a fair bit and found temples and things to look at (note - if you want to go in to.somwof the temple, you'll need long sleeves and trousers/skirts)

Depending what you like Gardens by the Bay are definitely worth a visit. Hawker markets and a Singapore Sling at Raffles!

Gardens by the bay

Botanical Gardens

Hawker centre for meals

Esplanade Roof terrace

Chinatown

Orchard Road

Sentosa - the most southerly point in continental asia

The Zoo is very good

Raffles for a Singapore sling

A boat trip down the river is good for a look at some of the “old Singapore”. With kids the Duck Tour with an amphibious vehicle so it does river and streets is lots of fun. Great restaurants at Coliers Quay (I like to stay around there), Orchard Road if you are into expensive shopping, beach club at Sentosa all good fun, if you do the Singapore Eye try and do it at dusk, watching all the lights go on is beautiful. Gardens by the Bay are spectacular. Make sure you get a hotel with a pool if you can, lots have rooftop pools which are nice in humid Singapore.

Beware the Singapore Sling! They are very innocuous, until you stand up and try to walk. 😂

Not a must see but a day not eat: durian fruit 🤮

Georgyporky · 29/07/2024 18:20

Many thanks everyone.
We are staying at Park Royal Marina Bay. I must check a map to see where everything is.

I had durian in Thailand many years ago. I'd compare it to eating mango in an enclosed space where DH has just farted.

There's a birthday while we're there, trying to choose between Violet Oon & Willow. Anyone been to either?

The Supertree light show at Gardens by the Bay.

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental during our stay. The evening buffet at Embu seemed very popular with locals - I have never seen so much seafood eaten in such a short time!

Buddha tooth relic temple is well worth a visit. It explains a lot about buddhism as well as being a fascinating visit.

a trip up the Marina Bay Sands is worth it.

the casino is good too

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 29/07/2024 19:18

Having stayed at the Park Royal Marina Bay recently I would see if you can Move to Park Royal Beach Road.

Had an awful stay at PR Marina Bay and a great on at PR Beach Road. I would not return to PR MB.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 29/07/2024 19:20

No one has mentioned night safari! Unique as far as I know. Is it no longer any good?

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 29/07/2024 19:22

And probably worth spending a tired, hot hour going all the way around the LRT. Good to see what it’s really like outside the tourist areas.

This was arranged by the tour company, Emerald Cruises.

I'd be really grateful if you could give me more details.

Night zoo
Hawkers market (Newton Circus is good)
Boat trip

Asiatoyork · 30/07/2024 07:21

I love Haw Paw Villa, but appreciate that is niche.

Asiatoyork · 30/07/2024 07:22

The new (ish) bird park is good. Massive aviaries that you walk through with free flying birds

backatschool · 30/07/2024 07:45

I live in SG, lots of good ideas above. Violet Oon at the national gallery and Willow are both nice. Violet Oon would be my choice of the two- it is next door to smoke and mirrors which is a good pre dinner drinks place.
There are loads of amazing restaurants - also have a look at Thevar, Koma, Revolver, Chefs Table if you get a choice.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/07/2024 19:35

Do you know which terminal you are docking at?

Hillcrest2022 · 30/07/2024 19:48

Another vote for the Zoo night safari. You get taken round on a little train and it's all floodlit. I loved it but that was about 15 years ago.

Asiatoyork · 31/07/2024 02:21

Good point - you should defo see the indoor waterfall at terminal 1 (I think).

I am leaving Singapore for good after being here for years today so this thread is very bitter sweet!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 31/07/2024 02:25

It’s worth a trip on the MRT to see the Rain Vortex - Changi T2

Singapore must-sees.
CalmTits · 31/07/2024 02:30

The botanical gardens were really nice for a breather and weren’t that busy when I went there.

Esimasia · 31/07/2024 07:14

I like the more traditional bits of Singapore - Little India/Kampong Glam/Chinatown. I liked the night light show at Gardens by the Bay but otherwise it felt just like Kew Gardens on acid and could have been anywhere. Ditto Marina Bay Sands and all the malls. Changi I was underwhelmed by - a man made waterfall and loads of shops. I’d not go to night safari or zoo as don’t like animals in captivity.

If you are there on a Saturday night before National Day then they are doing pilot runs of the celebrations. We stood by the Merlion and got the most incredible firework display in front of the Marina Bay Sands. About 8.30pm.

Georgyporky · 01/08/2024 18:48

Thanks again everyone.
