We have been idiots and our villa is v near the airport - leave early?

Because we’re idiots, we didn’t realise the Canaries villa we’d booked is v near the airport. By the time we’d realised it was too late - we wouldn’t have got any refund on flights or villa.

The plane noise is horrendous. Outside you can’t hear each other speak unless you shout. Inside it will definitely wake us up. Looking at flight times, flights continue till 2am and start again at 5.45am.

We’re going to give it a go but should we be prepared to try to change our flights and leave early? What would you do?

This is probably our last trip to the canaries as we’ve had some great times but have just outgrown it. We’re kicking ourselves for this, we’re usually so careful.

Can you not book a cheap hotel somewhere else on the island, and keep your flights?

AgentProvocateur · 27/07/2024 21:23

It’s not clear whether you’re already there or not. The flights won’t be continual. I’d get out the villa during the day and get earplugs for night. I’m sure it won’t be as bad as you think.

Vettrianofan · 27/07/2024 21:34

Get really merry and you won't even notice the noise by the time you get back to the hotel.

Kitkat1523 · 27/07/2024 22:00

Just find a cheap Airbnb elsewhere

Shoemadlady · 27/07/2024 22:04

You'll probably sound it out in a day or two and begin to not notice so much.

They’re already there - paragraph two x

HappierTimesAhead · 27/07/2024 22:10

White noise on your phone during the night?

MissyB1 · 27/07/2024 22:11

Get to a pharmacy and buy ear plugs.

SD1978 · 27/07/2024 22:13

So,you're not there, but assume that it will be miserable? I'd be going and at least trying to enjoy myself

pasta · 27/07/2024 22:16

If it really is unbearable I'd find a cheap airbnb and move

HappierTimesAhead · 27/07/2024 22:24

Where are all these cheap air b and b's in the Canaries at short notice?!

FuzzyStripes · 27/07/2024 22:25

Ear plugs and loud white noise, or try to find somewhere else.

sonjadog · 27/07/2024 22:25

I would find somewhere else to stay rather than go home early.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 27/07/2024 22:27

Yup we're already here. Ear plugs are on our shopping list for tomorrow.

Hopefully they'll stop flying at night

DeliciousApples · 27/07/2024 22:37

You'll get used to it.

I live on a flight path and it's annoying outside as you have to pause your conversation. And annoying inside when the doors and windows are open as you have to pause your tv programmes.

Most airports have more than one runway. Planes take off and land depending on wind direction at the time. Taking off is louder than landing.

So it could be that they start taking off on the other runway or in the opposite direction and the noise lessens at some point.

Don't let it spoil your holiday. Just get used to pausing life for ten seconds.

The planes will lessen at night but there will still be some.

If you want to see what's coming use the arrivals and departures section of the airport website where it will detail flights.

Or download flightradar24
and use the filter to select the airport for incoming and outgoing planes and you can see what's in the air live and when it's due to land.

piefacedClique · 27/07/2024 22:38

Which island are you on?

TerrysNeapolitan · 27/07/2024 22:44

I am a plane nerd - this sounds like Heaven! (sorry.....)

RaininSummer · 27/07/2024 22:46

I would try go move. I spent three sleepless nights near Bristol Airport. Absolute torture.

ChicaneOvenchips · 27/07/2024 22:48

Is it Matagorda in Lanzarote? If so, when I was there Saturday was the worst with flights until late but other days of the week weren't too bad.

Livelovebehappy · 27/07/2024 23:37

Was it mentioned in the reviews? If you haven’t looked, look at them now and see what others said. Maybe it isn’t going to be as bad as you think.

Definitelynotem · 28/07/2024 00:13

Just come back from a hotel in Greece on a flight path, it really wasn’t an issue. We could hear planes but mostly zoned out after the first day. Can’t imagine moving hotels because of it unless I was an extremely light sleeper!

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 28/07/2024 06:35

Was it not mentioned in reviews?

StormingNorman · 28/07/2024 07:28

How was your first night @Decisionsdecisions1?

Decisionsdecisions1 · 29/07/2024 18:11

Thanks all - we’re managing with ear plugs.

Nope nothing in the reviews. The planes are so low I can read all the logo writing on them!

Dp has pulled a muscle his back so this is turning into a comedy of errors holiday. Current working out how he’s going to sit on a plane for five hours when he can’t sit in a chair for five mins.
