Holiday Park/Self Catering in Bavaria

For the last few years we have enjoyed family holidays to The Netherlands staying in a variety of different holiday parks. I’ve been looking for something similar in Germany, ideally Bavaria but hitting a bit of a brick wall. We’re not looking for anything fancy or with extensive entertainment. Ideally an indoor pool in case of wet weather - we definitely needed that this year - and easy access to some good day trips with our 2 kids (12 and 15). Thanks

You will find swimming pools and lidos everywhere and they are a lot better, even the simpler council ones, than any UK pool.

Bavaria is a popular destination and lots of places will be booked out. Could you look for a s/c appartment near one of the lakes?

We are off to Chiemsee next month, booked 9 months ago, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor things to do and Munich is just a short train ride away.

Current weather forecast for mid August is high twenties btw.

Thanks @GrumpyPanda these look like a great place to start looking.
@reluctantbrit I was thinking for next year, we’ve just returned from 2 weeks in the Netherlands and had a great time but wanted to try somewhere different next year.

@Mumof278 Do definitely start looking early. I was once told by a farm stay holiday in northern Germany with several appartments that lots of people book 15 months! in advance. I can't even plan my annual leave that far.

We normally book via Vrbo but never holiday parks, we normally go for a flat or house in a town with walking distance to shops and restaurants.

@reluctantbrit thanks for the tip. Will definitely start looking early but like you say it’s hard to plan too far in advance! A self catering apartment would definitely work for us too - it’s just knowing where to start looking. Plenty of food for thought, thank you ☺️

@Mumof278

These are in Bavaria, OP.

I wondered whether you would also consider the North of Germany, though.

I've studied and worked in the South and liked it there very much, but I was also very taken with Hamburg.

If you took the ferry into Hamburg, you could be sitting down for coffee and cake within an hour of disembarking!

I like the look of the Feriendorf Altes Land!

@TheSquareMile Thanks for advocating Hamburg and Northern Germany.

I know Bavaria is lovely but as a Northern German, I am always sad when it's overlooked.

@Mumof278 - you may want to research Holsteinische Schweiz, the area around Plön and Eutin. Lots of things to do, large lakes and easy access to the Baltic Sea and Hamburg as well.

There's a huge complex around a tropical pool I'm told is very good, looked into it once, middle of Germany I think. Look at the Black Forest too, I love that side (and shorter drive) europaparc is worth a visit too

Thank you - I’ll have a look into all the suggestions. I lived in Germany for a year when I was at uni, near to Erfurt. We travelled around a wee bit but never made it as far as Hamburg so not familiar with that area at all. Definitely more food for thought 😌
