October half term holidays

SmileLady · 23/07/2024 23:17

Hi

Can anyone advise where to go on holiday for 7 nights over the October half-term?

There will be five of us: three children under 16 and two adults. The flight will take no more than two hours. Hopefully, there will be some sun.

Don't mind a mixture of city/beach.

Want a B&B or hotel. Do not want to have to clean up!

Happy to also drive.

Coming from London area.

October half term is always an iffy time weather wise so if sun is going to be a priority then you may have to travel for more than 2 hours....

minipie · 23/07/2024 23:21

No more than two hours’ flight and sun in late October is a challenge.

If you are ok with a chance of sun but also fair chance of rain, then maybe Seville/Malaga, Rome/Naples or Crete.

If you would like a better chance of sun then up the flight time and go to the Canaries, Marrakech or Cyprus.

SmileLady · 23/07/2024 23:22

I know. I am willing to push up to 3/4 hours. Last year, I went to Mallorca, and it rained most days.

Thanks. We were in Cyprus visiting family in April, and it was torrential rain! We don't have much luck with good weather on holidays!!

We go the Canary Islands every October half term, usually Lanzarote. Cheaper than long haul and always sunny!

EasterIssland · 23/07/2024 23:27

I’m going to Tenerife. 4h though. Anywhere in Spain apart from Canary Islands will be a lottery even Mallorca who by then is already in autumn. 2h is really difficult as most warmer places will be 4+

Reading this comment … ignore my previous comment 😂😂

ihe to say tho unsure about your budget but be prepared to pay a lot. The flights will probably cost quite a lot (mine for 2 adults 1 child were around 1.6k and I’m leaving before the break as my son has got inset days)

WittyFatball · 23/07/2024 23:36

Morocco is usually lovely in October!

Went to Alicante last October half term and it was sunny 27c but I know that's just luck.

MeganM3 · 23/07/2024 23:36

Egypt, Morocco, canaries.

I wouldn't risk Spain in October if wanting warm weather.

SmileLady · 24/07/2024 10:08

Thanks. Does anyone know of any move areas just outside of Barcelona to stay?

Gonna look at the Canaries. Thanks all

October near Barcelona you’re not going to have sunshine if that’s what you want. Certainly unheated outdoor swimming pools will be too cold.

reallywhywouldyou · 24/07/2024 10:44

Often go to Fuertaventura or Lanzarote then.

I’m first staying this time (despite I’m Spanish I’ve never been before 😂) staying in the south

I’ve been a few times to Barcelona in October and November lately as I’ve friends there. I can say it was quite warm.

you can look northern around lloret etc. you’ve as well Salou and port aventura at the south

PeachyKeane · 24/07/2024 10:47

Fuerteventura is nice and usually the cheapest of the Canaries. Should be decent weather at that time of year.

Sitges, just outside of Barcelona is nice, train into city, not sure of weather though

Chewbecca · 24/07/2024 10:48

You have a slightly better chance of higher temps going to Southern Spain - Málaga region Vs Barcelona.
E.g. Mijas / Nerja for resorts or maybe Cadiz for city?

You’re going the wrong time of year. Cyprus isn’t hot and dry consistently until the end of June.

Canaries are your best bet for October sunshine and a fairly short flight. Cape Verde will be hotter but it’s 5/6 hours from the UK.

minipie · 24/07/2024 10:50

Tenerife is … ok. It works well for a safe warm holiday with young kids. The northern half is more authentic and characterful but also much rainier and has cliffs rather than beaches mostly. South western area is sunnier with beaches but has a lot of hotels and resorts. I would pick Costa Adeje area if you want big hotels or if you want smaller and quieter then look further up that coast eg La Caleta and beyond. Areas south from Adeje like Playa las Americas are not my cup of tea personally.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 24/07/2024 10:54

Essaouira in Morocco is lovely , not overly developed, of you're happy to drive abroad it's a simple drive from Marrakech so you can do a few days city break in a riad in Marrakech then more laid back on the coast, or you can go straight to Essaouira

Thereisnoname · 24/07/2024 11:01

If your prepared to up the flight time, I'd reccomend Agadir. Pretty much guaranteed warm and sunny at that time of year, fairly cheap accommodation. Would reccomend the Riu Tikida Palace Hotel ( think that's the correct one there are a few)

minipie · 24/07/2024 11:02

I think Marrakech is more reliable weather wise so if OP has bad luck with weather that might be safer! Also lots of options for trips from Marrakech, Atlas, desert (and Essaouira). It’s not beachside of course but plenty of pool resorts just outside the town.

With older kids I’d pick Marrakech over Tenerife but it’s all personal taste.

What are you looking for OP, other than warmth?

Edited to add: I meant Marrakech has more reliable weather than Essaouira

SoSoller · 24/07/2024 11:04

We’ve been to Spain quite a few times for Halloween, and the weather was lovely each time - Malaga, Alicante etc. Low or even mid 20s.

Maybe we were just very lucky though?

Thanks. Yes. I grew up on Cyprus
But April this year was V V wet. Torrential rain and flooding for nearly 10 days.

I may go there again in Oct.
