Athens or Vienna in October

I am aware they are very different cities so just looking for opinions of people who have been.

It would be 6 nights in Athens first week in October. Would hope to maybe do a day trip to an island too. Again accomodation seems expensive.

Or 6 nights in Vienna last week in October. Would hope to do a day trip but not sure where yet. Accomodation also seems rather expensive.

I have been to Athens a few times and personally I would now try Vienna.
Would you not consider other destinations?

For me it would be Athens for weather and some travelling in the area to see all the classical sites. You’ll likely have perfect weather then.
seem a bit long for just Vienna unless you are planning to do some trips to other cities too (Bratislava?)

AlbaAurora · 24/07/2024 10:57

Thanks both.

Can't believe Bratislava is only an hour from Vienna, could potentially make it a twin city holiday. Open to other day trip suggestions from Vienna.

Restricted by flights from where I live (don't fly every day) and have already been to quite a few places.

Athens it would be good to do a day trip to an island. I know the weather will be much better there.

From Athens you can get a ferry to lots of the islands

I know both cities, they are very different!
If you've not been to Athens before, I would recommend an October trip there, as the weather will not be too hot, but still warm enough to enjoy outside events, eating etc.

Try to pick a hotel with a rooftop restaurant/bar with views of the Acropolis, to get the full benefit of the scene. I'd say you will probably get better value for your money in Athens than in Vienna. Trips to an island will be easy from Athens, perhaps Poros or Hydra?

You don't need that long for Vienna alone and personally it's so nice at Christmas I'd hold off until then to visit (but I love the Christmas markets).

Athens as the PP described sounds perfect

You can take a gorgeous train journey from Vienna to Zagreb, I'd do three days in each (fly home from Zagreb)

Sorry to hijack. AdaColeman is the sea generally very calm going to Hydra? I'd like to do that but have a seasick traveling companion

Athens, much more likely to be dry and warm in October.

Stay in Plaka - it’s touristy yes but most characterful, and very close to Acropolis, just do your research on restaurants and avoid the beckoning waiter places.

Yes, the Saronic Gulf should still be quite calm in October, but you can always check weather conditions when you are actually there.
The journey to Hydra is roughly between one and a half to two hours depending on which ferry company you sail with. You might consider visiting Aegina instead, which is only about forty minutes away on a Flying Dolphin.
