Do these holidays sound excessive to you?

For a couple in their 20s who don’t own a house yet.

Holiday 1: 7 nights greece (free accom)
Holiday 2: 10 nights barbados
Holiday 3: 7 nights cornwall (free accom)
Holiday 4: 7 nights mexico
Holiday 5: 3 nights new york

Take home pay of £6,500 a month

No amount of holidays is ever excessive, IMO

People can spend their money however they see fit.

Why is it excessive if they can afford it?

Sounds great good for them HOWEVER if they are living in your house rent free then that's different.

Only excessive if they are also trying to save for a house deposit.

What else have you to spend it on?

If they hope to ever own a house they're not going about the right way, and if I was their parent, I might be worried that they're not making themselves a secure future, but ultimately their money to spend as they see fit.

I mean it's 3 long haul holidays a year so purely from a flights perspective yes. It also depends if they have financial plans they want to achieve and how it fits with those and how they plan to manage long term if they don't fancy getting on the housing ladder. Assuming all of the above is sorted then it sounds great fun to me.

However, are they taking this many holidays and then complaining about being skint / unable to afford a house / unable to afford XYZ? If so, that is unreasonable.

It's more than I'd want to spend on holidays with that income personally but there's nothing wrong with it if you're happy with it.

Yes - for me it would be. Only because I'd want to hold a few days annual leave to have at home. Also wouldn't go long haul (Mexico) for just a week.

Add some context OP. Are they living in your house rent free?

Do you know what they spend? I once flew to Italy for £12! Holidays can be cheap as a childfree couple.

No, I don't think so. If they're travelling outside school holidays, I doubt they've even spent one month's pay. Seize the day, I say.

Depends on the timescale and other expenses. In general, no - I used to spend all my free money on holidays. I'd only go longhaul if I could go for at least 10 days though. I think flying to NYC for only three days is terrible tbh.

Depends. In my 20s, my priority was saving money for a house deposit, but we earned very little compared to this couple, so we settled for 1 holiday a year. It's up to them whst they choose to spend their money on.

If thats in one year then yes absolutely.
Thats eight flights at least, its really irresponsible. There will inevitably be clamp downs on flying if people dont start doing the right thing of their own voiltion.

For me:

• 3x long haul in one year is a bit excessive.
• The total amount of holiday isn't IMO - it's less than your average worker's annual holiday allowance.
• It is a problem if they are complaining of being skint or being unable to afford a home.

If that's per year and they haven't been able to buy a house yet then yes I think that's quite excessive. If they've chosen not to buy a house for some particular reason but have a plan to get on the property ladder and savings to enable that plus paying into pensions then they can do what they like. If living with parents rent free while spending a fortune on holidays then HELL NO!

When I was childless and in my 20s, I spent literally every single day of my holidays travelling. Taking days off to spend them at home would have been a massive waste in my opinion. If you can afford it, go for it. Of course, probably should not at a later date post on MN that you simply don't understand where all your money is going :D
