Would you pay £160 for an upgrade to premium economy?

It’s a day flight, 10 hours. Two of us. So total cost is £320. One way upgrade.

British Airways. Would you?

Yep, it'd be part of the adventure (ok, not adventure exactly) part of the holiday anyway.

painauchoc512 · 22/07/2024 21:00

Absolutely!!

Lucky you having the money for it not to be a consideration. For some people it's an expense that needs justifying

Is someone dying and this is my last chance to see them? That is pretty much the only reason I would consider subjecting myself to that much physical pain. I certainly wouldn’t do it for a holiday. I’d waste too many days at my destination trying to recover.

mitogoshi · 22/07/2024 21:31

I would and have

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 22/07/2024 21:32

Fuck me yes

Moonshiners · 22/07/2024 21:34

No because I would use that money for other things and I am skint.
I could have a weekend holiday for £350 so would do that instead.

Goldenthigh · 22/07/2024 21:34

We just paid £70ish for extra legroom seats in economy on a 12 hour flight so it depends on what else you'd get for a premium economy seat. Extra legroom is a non-negotiable requirement for us (Ds is 6'5" for example) so we always pay extra anyway so I'd probably jump at the chance.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 22/07/2024 21:43

I paid £70 each coming home
On a 7hr night flight which was easily worth it. Going out I think you have the excitement so I don't feel it was so worth it.

Some BA flights have a couple of rows of seats in pairs at the back of economy so you have a bit more space around you. They were not bad.

Is that a serious question? You can’t think of a reason why the price of a business class upgrade might not be an option?

I just looked at what a BA flight from London to Miami would cost (may not be where OP is going but is about 10 hrs). Economy standard is £590 return for my imaginary dates and business is £3880 for the same flights. It’s a different world price wise, a £160 PE upgrade is a bargain by comparison. You can’t think that everyone has a spare £6.5k for business.

Honestly, if you can’t afford Business, it baffles me people think PE is worth an upgrade from Economy. It never is. Put the money into an experience at the destination instead. Either go Business straight up or spend more when you’re there on something memorable. PE is not it.

GrumpyPanda · 22/07/2024 22:07

Only if it meant wider seats. Not for legroom.

lazzapazza · 22/07/2024 22:10

No but I am skinny and tight. If I was fat and frivolous then possibly.

OnTheBoardwalk · 22/07/2024 22:12

Absolutely. Don’t know if you’ve travelled much th3 last few years cos covid

i hadn’t and on my first flight in a long time the extra space made a difference

your choice some people would have extra spending money, nicer hotel, but I’d spend it on flights

BettyBardMacDonald · 22/07/2024 22:14

That's a bargain.

TinySmol · 22/07/2024 23:49

No. Not for a daytime flight.

Why? We’re lucky enough to be able to go business class now but previously have flown PE and it was definitely worth it to us. We’d probably go PE again if business was ridiculously priced.

For us the pros are:

  1. Bigger seats, both in leg room and wider, which makes a significant difference to our comfort, we’re not hugely tall so PE seats are good legroom wise
  2. Comfier seats with greater recline and leg/foot rests, makes it much more pleasant to chill out and watch a film on a long day flight
  3. Can usually get a window/aisle pair of seats so don’t have to deal with a seat neighbour
  4. Better drinks/food service due to smaller cabin

I'm not sure your info on economy seat armrests is correct. I've flown BA to Australia and back in the last month in economy and my armrests only went up halfway. I'd hoped my child could stretch out a bit and sleep but it was quite difficult.

it must be route specific. I fly transatlantic from the UK frequently and within Europe and they do go right up for those routes.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 23/07/2024 19:11

Yes do it!

Yumyumm · 24/07/2024 07:29

Yep, we did it in 2018 and you got all booze and soft drinks for free! Better meal too.

1yearplan · 24/07/2024 08:09

Absolutely! The food is better, the cabin is smaller and quieter. There's a footrest and the seats are bigger.
The arms rests only go up partially in economy now, so you can't easily lay across seats anymore. If you're flying in the school holidays the flights are likely to be rammed anyway - so the chances of finding 3 seats together to the US is tiny.
I work for an airline so have some insight :)
Whatever you decide, have a wonderful holiday!

Baxdream · 24/07/2024 22:18

Just flown premium with BA. Absolutely was worth the extra. We managed to sleep, the seats recline quite far and the service was better.
Flight home wasn't as good though as it was an older aircraft. Still glad we did it though

LynetteScavo · 24/07/2024 22:36

For me? No. But then I'm very tight about certain things. I know DS2 and DD crash out on planes so they wouldn't care (is that an ADD thing?) and I would rather spend the money on something else. I might pay for DH though because he's not keen on flying.

TizerorFizz · 25/07/2024 00:41

BA can have really good bargains in Business. Eg Denver is half the price of Miami for business. Depends on route.

I’d do PE for that increase for 10 hours. PE cabins can be quite small but each seat has more space. Always check seats on Seat Guru though. They have Red seats that are the worst ones. It totally depends on aircraft re good or bad seats so don’t take anyone’s word for it. Route, make/type of aircraft matters as does layout,

seeminglyranch · 25/07/2024 00:50

I would bite their fecking hand off for that price! Often it’s approx x2 the economy fare or just under. For a 10h flight it’s a steal. It’s notably more comfortable and the food is better. Especially on a newer plane.

A small cabin is a good thing; it’s one of the things they advertise premium is good for. First is usually pretty small! Fewer people, less noise, quicker service, shorter wait for the loo!

the2andahalfmillion · 25/07/2024 00:55

No from me. Only worth paying extra dosh for a lie flat bed during what would be your natural nighttime.
