Would you pay £160 for an upgrade to premium economy?

It’s a day flight, 10 hours. Two of us. So total cost is £320. One way upgrade.

British Airways. Would you?

Yes but learn from me - they will push alcohol on you from the minute your bum hits the seat.
Being in holiday mood I said yes, then had to deal with customs in Mexico with a banging hangover...

Howareu · 22/07/2024 08:56

Yes

behindthemall · 22/07/2024 08:57

Yes, particularly if the premium economy is 2 seats rather than 3 (so we wouldn’t have a seat neighbour).

Wimbledoner · 22/07/2024 08:59

Wow, yes definitely.

RobinHood19 · 22/07/2024 09:02

I would at £160 per person, but mostly because that’s a very low price for a big increase in tier points (from 20/35 to 90). I’m not so bothered about legroom or real cutlery and plates - although I do appreciate them - but trying to reach FF status on any one of the 3 alliances I use is much trickier than back in the day when I could consolidate it all into BA and climb up more quickly. Nowadays building up points is more important to me personally than the soft product on board.

100%, without a moment’s hesitation. That is a very very good price for PE.

Usually PE is in a 2-3-2 or 2-4-2 configuration, which when you’re travelling in a pair is worth the money just by itself. Being able to sit together without one of us being in a middle seat on a long flight is worth every penny of that £160 to us. We are willing to pay more to fly with an airline with a 2-4-2 long-haul economy layout rather than the 3-3-3 layout.

As a PP said it also brings significantly more tier points, which, even if you don’t fly that frequently can add up quickly with long haul flights.

SalviaDivinorum · 22/07/2024 09:21

No.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/07/2024 09:21

Not for day flight

How many inches extra do you get leg room

bilgewater · 22/07/2024 09:25

No. I've been upgraded for free to PE (12 hour flight) and didn't think it was worth paying for.

cheezncrackers · 22/07/2024 09:26

I don't think PE is that a good deal really, because there are solid dividers between the seats. You get a slightly bigger seat in a smaller cabin, but you're still bolt upright in a chair for 10 hours, which if you're trying to sleep is still shit. If you have the money and want to try it, go ahead, but I never think PE is significantly better than economy.

Dotto · 22/07/2024 09:28

No, not worth it, would rather spend the money on enjoying myself elsewhere. I'm 5'10" and BA mixed fleet economy is perfectly fine for my height.

Mercurial123 · 22/07/2024 09:28

It's definitely worth it. That price is a bargain.

OolongTeaDrinker · 22/07/2024 09:40

That's hard to say without knowing your financial situation. If you are in the position where you can spend hundreds on a night out and not really notice it, then yes. But if £320 is half of your holiday spending money then no I wouldn't say it was worth it..

Chewbecca · 22/07/2024 09:48

Yes, for a 10 hour flight, it's a good price and it is a (slightly) more comfortable experience. (Though of course, as a PP said, not if you're on a very tight budget and would have to cut back elsewhere to afford it).

Dearg · 22/07/2024 09:52

I would save it for the return night flight, unless I could afford it both ways.
It is more comfortable, but if you are likely to be awake and watching movies etc, stick to economy, but maybe pay for a seat reservation there Emergency exit row etc.

andyourpointiswhat · 22/07/2024 09:57

Depends on the product really. We flew Qantas PE Sydney/Vancouver return recently on one of their new Dreamliners. We just couldn’t justify the cost of business and had never flown PE before. Tbh it was so good that I would forego the lie flat bed for the difference in price, even on a 14 hour flight. With some carriers PE is economy plus, others business lite so I would check out reviews and make a decision. Qantas’ offering was definitely business lite.

CrushingOnRubies · 22/07/2024 10:07

For 10 hours I would!

Brendabigbaps · 22/07/2024 10:10

Hell yes

CraftyNavySeal · 22/07/2024 10:11

No. I did it to Houston and it was not worth the money at all. Usually I fly United because it’s the cheapest and BA premium economy wasn’t even better.

If it was a different airline then probably yes.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 22/07/2024 10:14

100% a bit of extra space on a flight that long is a godsend

Letsbookaholiday · 22/07/2024 10:19

Yes absolutely at that price!

PrimalLass · 22/07/2024 10:20

Definitely

Lorrymum · 22/07/2024 10:20

We flew PE for the first time in March. Absolutely loved it! More space, quicker off the plane and into passport control. Our bags were the first on the bag carousel so quicker out of airport.

jackstini · 22/07/2024 10:23

100% - mostly for the airline miles, but also usually a better configuration so you can sit in a 2 and not 2 of a 3

berksandbeyond · 22/07/2024 10:24

I wouldn’t have considered a 10 hour flight in economy so that’s a no brainer to me
